Jul 15 (4 day) Poseidon Fishing Adventures

July 16th, 2022|Categories: Captain Mike's Blog, Trip Reports|

Good evening,
It was a tough day for us.  We got into a kelp zone late and there were just scraps left. So we kept rolling down and bumped into another large area of non-biting bluefin which we tried for a little while for one bite.

We did see fish on kelps, but we just couldn’t get any bites. So we’re going to try again tomorrow morning.

Good morning ,

We traveled yesterday to get to the bluefin grounds in time for a night bite.  We saw very good sign throughout the night of 50-200# fish.  They didn’t bite all that well, but we had a couple opportunities–once right when we got here and one right before the sun came up.

We’re seeing very good sign again with the sun up here this morning but they are not biting yet. Stay tuned!

The infamous night bite!

Good evening,

We looked at these same fish all day today.  It was very frustrating at times since there are plenty of fish but it’s hard for us to get a bite, and even harder to land.  We did manage to land a few and they were nice ones.

We still see it here before sunset and we’re going to see what the first few hours of the night bring, then move on.

Tackle Tip Thursday Vol. 189 (Yoyos for Yellows)

July 14th, 2022|Categories: Captain Mike's Blog, Tackle Tip Thursday|

Welcome back to another episode of Tackle Tip Thursday, featuring Penn’s Steve Carson. With the kelp patty action resulting in some very fun fishing, we thought we’d give some tips on using yoyo lures to maximize the number of yellowtail you boat with the greatest ease.

Hello anglers,
After a very slow day and night yesterday we decided to head south for some action with yellowtail on kelp paddies. We found a few kelps that have some nice size yellows on them!

The weather is nice with light winds very little seas and the sun is coming out. More later,

Hello anglers,

We went west to try for bluefin tuna after getting good reports from the boats on scene. We had a great opportunity to catch bluefin tuna up to 180 pounds. We had some losses but everyone had a great chance. We saw fish almost all night until about 4:30 a.m. when the fish vanished.

We are hopeful for some action during the day as we wait for another chance tonight.

More later,

Hello again!
We stayed close to last night’s area all morning, and have seen tremendous schools of bluefin on the surface, eating small bait. Unfortunately we haven’t caught anything. We will keep working and hope for a repeat tonight! Very nice weather with light winds and a small swell.

Good morning,

We marked one of our kelps from yesterday with our satelite buoy and hit it a few times this morning  We loaded up on it and took off around noon. The kelp paddy was flying to the south and we’re a long way from home.

We had wide open fishing on 12-20# yellowtail again.  Very fun morning and the weather is nice as well.

Good morning,

We looked locally at some school-grade bluefin tuna yesterday and had no success. So we decided to slide down the beach last night.

We’ve spent our day kelping this morning and have finally found our first biting kelp.  We’re seeing quite a bit of quality dorado and yellowtail on them.  The first few kelps didn’t bite, but the last one did. The yellowtail are 10-25# and the dorado are 8-14#.

Good action, fun fishing, good weather.

Quality yellowtail for Michele!

Good evening,

We had a big day today.  We found a few more kelps that were biting pretty good. It’s the same grade of fish. Very good action on quality grade of fish.  We were catching them every way you could think of surface iron, yoyo lures, fly lined baits, colt snipers .. all of the above.

We’re going to try again in the morning.

Good morning,

We are seeing this yellowfin this morning though they are not biting all that well yet. We have scraped up a few yellowtail and captured a dorado as well this morning however.  Hoping for a shot this afternoon. Tough conditions this morning.

Dorado for Mike!

Good evening,

Things started to look up around lunchtime. We had a good shot at these 18-25lb yellowfin.  They were boiling all around the boat but it fizzled out after we caught a couple handfuls. We couldn’t get another one to go.

Then it fell flat  so we started to work out to the west looking for a kelp. Tough conditions this afternoon. The wind has come down a little but its still choppy.
