Jun 28-Day’s wrap-up

June 28th, 2010|Captain Mike's Blog|

Howdy anglers, Today was a walk down memory lane to get the familiar feelings of fishing for longfins back to what it was last year. This was my first trip at the wheel this year and we all had a fun time. To start the trip we had a great load of sardines for bait and then the weather was like a lake all day. My water bottle never moved on the dash-that’s how nice the weather was. Shortly after daybreak the first longfin hit the deck and it kept up that pace for most of the morning. It was like regulation albie fishing: meter marks, jig strikes, followed up by bait fish. After morning was through, all the boats in the area had a bit of a lull and then it picked up again in the afternoon. Once again back to routine jigstrikes and followed by bait fish. We are all happy and headed to Fishermans Landing with a nice catch of albacores, and also managed to convince a finicky bluefin to bite today. The bluefin sign is still very plentiful but just not interested in what we have to offer. But we’re all hoping that when those bluefin do decide to bite, there’s enough around to make some good catches. Tip of the day-When the weather is calm and very little wind, the boat doesn’t move as much, so spreading out makes the tangles less. Good luck and hope to see ya on the wate, Capt Aaron

Reports look good!

The 1.5 day trips are looking good for nice catches of albacore at 100 miles. We have room on Jun 27 and Jun 29. Also the albacore/bluefin news a little further away is also good for our 4-day July 1-5. No time like the present!

Jun 27-29 is a GO!

Let’s get back on the tuna! There are only 16 anglers on this trip, so let me know if you want a spot reserved for you. celia

Hello anglers, Today we extended our 1.5 day trip by a few hours and tried the Rock Pile at the Coronados Islands for yellowtail. The reports were favorable but not today. We only landed a few yellows. We did that because we had very little success yesterday on the tuna grounds. We only managed to land 2 albacore and 1 bluefin tuna for our efforts. We saw some fish but they didn’t want to bite. In the afternoon the wind came up and made it difficult to work. We are hoping that with some good weather in the forecast the next few days and the full moon coming there might be a change in conditions and something starts to bite. Hope to see you soon, Capt Art

Hello anglers, We started in the same area as yesterday with hope of better weather and spots of bluefin tuna. Unfortunately the weather is up and there are very few spots of fish. It has been very difficult to work and so the result wasn’t good. We only managed to catch a single bluefin tuna for our efforts today. The fish are still around along with the bait balls and bird life. I’m sure that when the weather straightens out there will be a chance to catch a bluefin tuna. More from the next trip, Capt Art

June 18–Mid-day report

June 18th, 2010|Captain Mike's Blog|

Hello anglers, We are on the first day of a 3-day trip sponsored by Western Outdoor News and the weather is good with very little wind and a good-size ground swell. We are currently 100 miles from San Diego. So far this morning we have seen several spots of bluefin tuna and we have managed to land 13 fish in the 20-30 pound range, with a few more hooked up right now. There is a good sign of fish so if we find the right school that wants to bite a little, we are going to have a great day. There is a good sign of bait in the area with lots of birds and a few whales. Once again its all about the food source and there seems to be a good supply of bait for these tuna. More later, Capt Art

June 18–Day’s end

June 18th, 2010|Captain Mike's Blog|

Hello anglers, We started the day by seeing plenty of fish and were encouraged by that. We managed to land 17 bluefin tuna by 1:00 pm. Then the wind came up and the fish went down for the most part. It seems that the fish might be weather-sensitive. We did see a few fish this afternoon and some of the other boats in the area had some success. We are staying the night and hoping the wind backs off a little to make it easier to work. The forecast calls for the wind to diminish tomorrow and for the next few days. Larry Grey and his grandson Alex each landed a bluefin and their trip is made! More tomorrow, Capt Art

Hello anglers, We travelled northwest today towards home and due to the weather and the current, we didn’t have much fishing time. We did find an area with some jumping bluefin tuna and we managed to land 6 fish in the 30 pound range. We saw 5 or 6 different spots of jumpers as well. We are looking forward to spending some time in that area on the next trip. More later Capt Art
