Trip #23 (6-day) Sep 30-Oct 6

October 1st, 2018|Captain Mike's Blog|

Hello anglers,

We departed yesterday on a 6-day ultra-limited load trip. We decided to start off by heading west to San Clemente Island as there was a sign of the big bluefin tuna seen and caught the day before. This is a new development. These fish had disappeared for about two weeks but showed up again in the same zone. We arrived at 9 pm last night and it didn’t take long to locate a school of bluefin. In fact, we saw fish most of the night  and had no problem finding fish this morning. But unfortunately the bluefin didn’t bite for us. There were a few 40-50 pound fish caught, and we heard of two fish over 200 pounds landed by other boats. They were the lucky ones! There were other boats with the same opportunities as us with the same result.

With the hurricane dissipating and out of the area tonight as predicted, we are traveling south this afternoon and will be fishing for yellowfin tuna and dorado tomorrrow morning. We currently have great weather with light winds and a south swell that the storm has generated. We are also looking for kelp paddies the rest of today.

Wish us luck!

Trip #22 (7-day) Sep 23-30, sponsored by Seeker Rods (final day)

Hello anglers,

We are traveling today in good weather. Everyone finished breaking down their rods and reels this morning. The crew is scrubbing the boat and preparing for our turnaround tomorrow morning (Sunday). For those wondering about our fishing status because of the storm (Tropical Storm Rosa) heading to Baja, we have options for fishing closer to home away from the storm while the it passes, which is scheduled for later today (Monday).

Thanks to all our returning anglers for a great 7-day trip!

Hello anglers,
We departed today on a 7-ay trip with Fred Brandt, pro-staffer from Seeker Rods and headed for The Ridge. Today anglers relaxed and got re-acquainted with old friends from the Searcher family. We all watched some football and golf too.
We have a beautiful load of bait that has been curing at the recievers for a week! I’m pretty pleased with the quality. Tomorrow will have a seminar and do lots of rigging everyone. We plan to start fishing Tuesday.

Fred from Seeker is checking on line on one of his reels and the trip has only just begun!

Ocean to Galley: Marinated Seared Ahi

September 18th, 2018|Captain Mike's Blog|

Looking for a way to prepare all your Searcher-caught yellowfin tuna? How about chef Geri Sue’s creamy Italian marinade with a nice sear on the fish?

Marinade (makes 12 servings):

1 cup olive oil

1/4 cup cider vinegar

2 tbsp diced onion

2 tbsp diced garlic

1 tsp sugar

1 tsp ground mustard

2 tbsp Italian herbs

Mix 1 egg with the oil and other ingredients. Add a dash of salt and pepper. Marinate fish fillets for 1/2 hour.

Sear: Cook marinated fish on a medium high grill for just a minute or two on each side. Fish should remain pink in the middle.

Enjoy! And send us photos of your creation!

Here is a photo from Angler Dave B. Off the boat in the morning and on the table for dinner, doesn’t get any better.
