Hello all,

Good fishing for yellowtail this morning. The fish are 12 to 20 pounds with a few stand outs that are 25 pounds. Tackle tip for you is, live sardine on 40 pound line and a 4/0 Owner hook was the method of choice today. A few fish were landed on yo-yo lures, scrambled egg (Tady), chartreuse and white (flat fall) were the good colors. Here is Tanner S.of Bay City Brewery with a nice yellowtail. The weather is awesome, sunny skies and light winds.

Evening update:

Our great fishing continued until 2 pm today. Everyone caught what they needed for yellowtail. It was one of our best days this year with good-size fish and great weather. Even the crew got in the action! I hooked and handed several fish and Captains Kenny and Mike had some fun doing the same.Towards the end of the bite Ryan landed a fish after hooking a few. Even Chef Roger had a few bites. Here is Ryan and Mike with a nice yellowtail.

We started our day with a sample of yellowfin tuna in the 10-15 pound range, caught with live sardines. But the skipjack and bonito took over and made it hard to land a tuna. We went offshore looking for tuna on kelp paddies. Unfortunately we didn’t find the right kelp despite finding several paddies.We are hopeful about tomorrow!

The weather is great with light winds and just a residual swell left over from the storm. We are headed further south on the coast to try for yellowtail. Here is a picture of the great ocean we have.

Ocean to Galley: Hummus

Looking for some fun appetizers to have before you serve your Searcher caught fish for dinner? How about Chef Roger’s hummus? It goes with everything and you can dress it up or down. 

Ingredients:

  • 1 15.5 oz Can chickpeas (drained)

  • 6 ounces roasted red bell peppers (set 2 oz aside for 

    garnish)

  • 1 jalapeño, seeded, diced

  • 1 tablespoon chopped garlic

  • 3 tablespoons chopped cilantro leaves

  • 1 teaspoon paprika

  • 3 tablespoons chopped onion

  • 1 teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper

  • 1 tablespoon dried crushed chipotle peppers

  • 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil

Directions: Put all ingredients in a food processor and blend. While those ingredients are coming together, drizzle olive oil in until all in smooth and velvety. Salt to taste while blending. Let set in refrigerator for a minimum of 1 hour. Garnish with chopped red bell pepper and drizzle olive oil over the top, serve with chips (or veggies) and enjoy the reviews.

Hello anglers,

We departed yesterday on a 6-day ultra-limited load trip. We decided to start off by heading west to San Clemente Island as there was a sign of the big bluefin tuna seen and caught the day before. This is a new development. These fish had disappeared for about two weeks but showed up again in the same zone. We arrived at 9 pm last night and it didn’t take long to locate a school of bluefin. In fact, we saw fish most of the night  and had no problem finding fish this morning. But unfortunately the bluefin didn’t bite for us. There were a few 40-50 pound fish caught, and we heard of two fish over 200 pounds landed by other boats. They were the lucky ones! There were other boats with the same opportunities as us with the same result.

With the hurricane dissipating and out of the area tonight as predicted, we are traveling south this afternoon and will be fishing for yellowfin tuna and dorado tomorrrow morning. We currently have great weather with light winds and a south swell that the storm has generated. We are also looking for kelp paddies the rest of today.

Hello anglers,

We are traveling today in good weather. Everyone finished breaking down their rods and reels this morning. The crew is scrubbing the boat and preparing for our turnaround tomorrow morning (Sunday). For those wondering about our fishing status because of the storm (Tropical Storm Rosa) heading to Baja, we have options for fishing closer to home away from the storm while the it passes, which is scheduled for later today (Monday).

Thanks to all our returning anglers for a great 7-day trip!

Hello anglers,

We moved north to try for yellowtail on the coast last night. We had good action this morning on yellowtail 15-25 pounds. Almost all the fish were landed using live sardines with 40 pound line and a 3/0 J hook.  Everyone had a good time with steady action and great weather. Sunny skies and light winds. We are finishing our trip today and will be traveling north and arriving early on Sunday morning. Here is Fred B from Ventura with a nice yellowtail. Fred is the Seeker rep on this trip and did a great job passing on all his knowledge about saltwater fishing and Seeker rods. Thanks to Seeker for all the great swag on this trip and their support this season.

Ocean to Galley: Sesame Chili Marinade

Looking for a way to prepare all your Searcher-caught fish? How about chef Dan’s marinade, it is great for fish and can double as a vinaigrette as well.

Ingredients:

  • 1 Cup Soy Sauce
  • 1 Cup rice wine Vinegar
  • 1 Tbsp Ginger
  • 2/3 Cup Granulated Sugar
  • 1 Cup Sesame oil
  • 1/2 Cup Canola/ olive oil
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1 1/2 Tsp Crushed red chilies
  • 1 Tbsp Granulated Garlic

Directions: Blend everything in food processor until smooth. Place marinade on fish for 30mins and cook as desired or you can place on a salad as a vinaigrette. 

Makes 4 cups.

Hello anglers,

We have had steady action this morning with lots of skipjack, small yellowtail and small tuna. But we also have been landing some mixed-grade yellowfin tuna up to 40 pounds. Most of the fish are caught on live sardines.

The weather is tremendous today with clear skies and light winds. David Thiessen is posing with  his jackpot contender.
