Trip 16 (3 day) Aug 19-22 Capt Potatohead Memorial Trip Underway!

August 19th, 2016|Captain Mike's Blog|

Friend to fisherman and promoter of FUN, Capt Dick Uranga, is our guiding force behind this annual memorial trip which raises money for PANCAN, Pancreatic Cancer Action Network…the disease that took his life. Dick was dubbed Capt Potatohead, thus the name of our open charter every year.

For this trip, a second jackpot is raised and the “Sportsman/woman of the Trip” wins that amount towards a Searcher Sportfishing trip in 2017. Long-time friend to Dick and Searcher, Terry Onishi, re-wraps a rod belonging to Dick and donates the rod and a reel to the on-board raffle, raising even more money. Thank you, Terry!

Proceeds from the second jackpot, sales of raffle tickets on board for fabulous donated items, a donation from Searcher Sportfishing, and money raised through other hi-jinks all goes to PANCAN! Anglers have fun and we support research and education of Pancreatic Cancer. Oh, and there’s a fishing trip in there too!

Thanks to our sponsors, Izorline, Owner Hooks, Aftco, FishBonz restaurant, Calico Rose and so many more!

Trip 15 (5 day) Aug 17 Mid-day report

August 17th, 2016|Trip Reports|

Howdy anglers, This morning we had some steady action on some yellowfin tuna. The size isn’t great, but there was a school that was hungry and we had fun catching and releasing some tuna. We also watched three striped marlin put on a acrobatic show for us!

We’re working north in hopes of some better-grade fish. The weather is wonderful. The sun has come out and we like that.
Capt Aaron and the Searcher crew

Howdy anglers, The afternoon was a bit slower on the tuna though we did manage to catch a few more. We’re headed up and will finish the trip off looking for kelps or more schools of tuna. The weather is still very nice and we’re happy about that.. Fresh yellowtail for dinner–that’s also a bonus for tonight’s ride up

Trip 15 (5 day) Aug 16 Mid-day Report (updated)

August 16th, 2016|Trip Reports|

Howdy anglers: We’ve had a fantastic morning here fishing for yellowtail.! The best methods were yo-yo and flylining a sardine. The weather is superb and we’re hoping for a little more action before we start heading north, looking for some tuna or dorado. Here is a sample of our yellowtail caught by Ray Daniels.

Anglers are eating well, a delicious swordfish dinner last night and we think there’s fresh yellowtail in the forecast!

The weather is beautiful and there will be updates later today and in the coming days. They plan to look around for other species to catch.

Searcher office crew

Howdy anglers: Not much action to report this afternoon after we went offshore looking for tuna. We’re moving up the line to be in a zone that has had some tuna. We’re hoping that they are hungry and plentiful. The weather is still nice and we’re enjoying that. Wish us luck to find those elusive fish. Here is another nice yellow from this morning with deckhand Ryan (R2) and Jack Rauch.sstrip15jackrauch

When we say “Ultra Limited Load,” we mean that 14 lucky anglers are aboard to share a 95-foot fishing platform and Searcher‘s brand-new bait tank! They all agree it’s the only way to go for a 5-day trip in style, including a private cabin.

Trip 14 (5 day), Accurate Reels/Seeker Rods Aug 12-13 Reports

August 14th, 2016|Trip Reports|

Hello anglers,

We had a slow afternoon for catching. We saw plenty of fish but it wouldn’t bite very well. And we had some wind to contend with. Regardless everyone had a good time!

Today (August 13) we finished our trip with Accurate Products, Seeker Rods and Gary Gillingham. We stopped and fished for a short time on the coast. We caught just a sample of yellowtail and bonito.

The weather is pretty good for travelling home. We had a movie matinee with plenty of gourmet popcorn and Clint Eastwood on the screen! The galley did their usual great job and served cheeseburgers for lunch and fresh yelllowtail for dinner.

Trip 14 (5 day) Aug 12 Mid-day Report

August 12th, 2016|Trip Reports|

Hello anglers,

We started our day at 4 am  so we could catch some greenback mackerel to add to our bait variety. We went back to the good yellotwtail area from yesterday. We didn’t see the same sign of good conditions, so we opted to try a different zone. We saw fish and sat patiently on the anchor, and then had the reward of some action! It was also the first time we used the dropper loop method and  some people had good success. We hope to have the same afternoon action today.

Chef Dan Cramer helped Lindsey Ginter from Long Beach, CA land a nice yellowtail this morning. Later Chefs Dan and Charley will make their famous fresh yellowtail dinner!

We had some really good action this afternoon and plenty of opportunities for everyone to catch quality yellowtail. We are spending the night and trying again tomorrow. We hope to repeat what we experienced today! All in all, a great day of fishing.ssaug11mikebrown
