Trip 1 (3 day) June 25

June 26th, 2016|Trip Reports|

Hello anglers: We worked hard today with not much luck. It was the ol’ “should have been here yesterday” scenario with good reports from the day before. Unfortunately the conditions changed and the yellowtail wouldn’t bite. After trying for yellowtail we went offshore and found some groups of common dolphin that had signs of small yellowfin tuna. We caught 4 12-pounders on the troll, but nothing on the bait. The conditions were great with 67.5 degree blue water. We anticipate catching something in the same area in the future.
We end this trip with an “E for effort” with lots of hard work but not much to show for it. One really great thing is the new bait tank worked really well! Lots of room back there and the bait thrived. The hand wells allow for multiple people to access baits at the same time. Lots of positive feedback from the anglers.
Looking forward to the next trip! There is space on the Izorline-sponsored 4-day leaving June 30th.

Trip 1 (3 day) June 24 report

June 25th, 2016|Trip Reports|

Hello anglers: We started in the area where the bluefin tuna has been seen the past few days. Only the fish didn’t show up there today! We headed south looking for kelp paddies and yellowtail. We saw several kelps and a few had fish on them. Most of the yellowtail were on the small side, but keepers, and a few were better grade fish. Capt Ryan is pictured with Ross Langley from Oceanside and his good-size yellowtail.
Hoping for better results tomorrow, Team Searcher

Trip 1 (3 day) June 23 daily report

June 24th, 2016|Trip Reports|

Hello anglers: We arrived at the tuna zone just in time for all the schools to go down. We did see two spots of fish late in the day.–they didn’t want to bite unfortunately. We managed to hook and land an 18-pound yellowfin tuna. So, Robert King from Granada Hills was the lucky angler and he drew first blood to start the 2016 fishing season! Robert won a Shimano flat fall lure for landing the first fish. He and Capt Aaron are pictured in the bow with his fish. Hoping for better luck tomorrow, Team Searcher

World Premiere: Searcher’s New Bait Tank!

June 22nd, 2016|Captain Mike's Blog|

The final touch was placed today on this year’s exciting Searcher project: our brand-new custom bait tank!  John of Shelter Island Sign Shop carefully and expertly placed the Searcher decals on the side of our new hand wells!  The new bait tank is fully functional and is ready to rock!

Since our last update, the tank was attached to the deck, the plumbing was installed and the exterior finish was applied.  Our own “Team Bait Tank” (Captains Aaron and Ryan) worked long days getting this final phase of the project finished! The end product is fantastic!  We can’t wait to put our new bait tank to work as we begin our fishing season!  Join us on an upcoming trip and try it out!

Tackle suggestion for bluefin tuna

June 21st, 2016|Trip Reports|

Hello anglers,
We are super excited to get our fishing season started this week! There is a slight chance for a large bluefin tuna on our first trip. It has been difficult to hook and land them but we will certainly try our luck.
We want you to be prepared so we recommend a 2 speed reel with 60# mono. You may use it for fly-lining a live bait or use it as a kite outfit. Also if you are a practiced caster, a long rod with 40-50# mono and a surface lure or large popper has been the method used recently. We hope to see you aboard soon!

Trip Report – Turner’s Outdoorsman Seminar – June 16, 2016

June 20th, 2016|Captain Mike's Blog|

SSSnMarcosTurners

Hello Searcher friends!

On June 16, Captain Art and Team Searcher had a fantastic evening seminar at Turner’s Outdoorsman San Marcos with our host, manager Lori Sachau and her amazing Turner’s team!

The “Live Bait Tuna Fishing” Seminar attracted a full house of attendees!  Some of the topics discussed were line and hook suggestions, bait selection and handling techniques, bait hook placement, knot tying and recommendations for the use of artificial lures.

The attendees came prepared with excellent questions, and once those questions were addressed, the prizes from both raffles (one from Turner’s and one from Searcher – each with multiple prizes!) were awarded.  Theresa R. was the lucky winner of the $250 Searcher gift certificate!

Thanks to Lori and Team Turner’s for hosting our seminar!  We’ll be back soon!

We can’t wait to see our friends, old and new, aboard Searcher as we begin our 2016 season!  Talking about fishing made us realize how much we are looking forward to the start of Trip 1 in just a few days! 🙂

Bootz’ Birthday Contest Winner!

June 15th, 2016|Captain Mike's Blog|

Team Searcher is still celebrating the birthday of our beloved spokesperson, Bootz!  Searcher friends from near and far showered Bootz with birthday wishes, and we even surprised the birthday boy with a big party aboard Searcher!

We shared everything you submitted with Bootz – all of the birthday messages, photos, videos and poems – and he was overcome with joy and gratitude to be recognized on his special day!

Our team of judges and the birthday Bootz unanimously selected Howard Folmer as the winner of Bootz’ Birthday Contest! Howard’s poem “Bootz” (submitted via Facebook) captures the true essence of fishing aboard Searcher!

Hearing the poem made everyone at the party long even more for the start of our fishing season!

Congratulations, Howard!  You won a new pair of Xtratuf boots!

Prize courtesy of our awesome sponsors Xtratuf! 🙂 🙂 🙂

Searcher friends: Please enjoy reading Howard’s winning poem and dream about getting your own fishing boots on Searcher‘s deck soon!  Season start is just around the corner! We can’t wait!

Bootz

by Howard Folmer

Bootz, my dear, what can I say?
I long to be with you night and day.

When we are apart, it pains my sole,
I’m only complete when its you, me, and a pole.

You see, when I walk and I don’t feel you there,
protecting my feet from the water and air,
Its like a part of me is missing (especially when fishing)!

I feel warm and protected when you mold yourself to me.
We spend hourz together when we are at sea.
I’m saying all this, so you will know,
How much I love you, from heel to toe.

I so look forward to shedding my suit,
to put on some shortz and my favorite Bootz.
Happy birthday my friend, I hope you celebrate
Until we meet again, I can hardly wait.
