Searcher jackpot winners display their big fish September 16

Art Taylor brought his Searcher home to Fisherman’s Landing September 16 after a five-day Let’s Talk Hookup charter to Cedros Island.

In his last report at sea on September 15, Art wrote, “Today we finished our trip with a little action on decent size yellowtail of 12 to 22 pounds. Most of the fish were caught on flyline sardines, with a few fish caught on yo-yo jigs, blue and white.

We only had a couple of hours to fish and we managed to land 44 fish. The weather today was great–clear skies and calm seas. We are headed home with a great catch of fish and we will be at the dock around 8:30am.”

Doug Nance of San Diego won first place for a 35.8-pound yellowtail. He was tied by Wade Wells of Camarillo, who had an identical fish. Hans Giesholt of Tempe, AZ won third place for a 33.8-pound yellowtail.

Hello anglers, Today we spent the day trying for yellowtail. We are at Cedros Island and the conditions are good with with warm, clean water. We moved around quite a bit, trying different spots and landed 75 yellowtail and three dorado. That’s a little on the slow side for this place, but we still had some action. There is quite a bit of barracuda and bonito mixed in so it makes it difficult to land a yellowtail when you have to get a bait through other fish. We elected to stay and try for those good-grade yellowtail tomorrow. We will try to replenish our bait supply with mackerel. I am hoping that will help with the bigger yellows. More tomorrow, Capt Art

Hello anglers, Today we elected to stay offshore and look for kelp paddies instead of going straight to Guadalupe Island. The fishing at the island is a bit slow currently. We were really lucky and found good fishing on kelps. There were mixed fish on one kelp: good-grade dorado from 12 to 20 pounds, yellowfin tuna 15 to 25 pounds, and yellowtail 12 to 15 pounds. Every kelp had a sign of fish! The weather was good with a little chop. The water temp was 72 degrees. Everyone had a great time and landed a nice-size dorado. We are headed to Cedros Island to try for those good-grade yellowtail. More tomorrow, Capt Art If you are preparing for an upcoming Alijos Rocks/Ridge Trip, here’s a few tackle tips from Capt Art:

Photo Gallery Update If you see a photo of yourself on an 2009 fishing trip under “Photo Gallery,” you can order a print directly from SmugMug. Most people find it easy to do. They offer a variety of sizes and types, and even mugs, keychains and clothing. (Makes a great gift too, so drop some hints around home!) Many thanks to Steve Lamb, our photographer and cook, for most of the photos taken aboard.

We are currently operating a natural history tour but will be posting fishing news as we get it. Our next fishing trip leaves Sep 11 (5 days) and still has a few spots open! Searcher regulars, Gary Holpuch and Tim Farmer, get caught on tape on a recent 5-day trip fishing offshore and at Guadalupe Island. (Video by Ray Guardiano)
