Hey anglers, Our decision to stay at Cedros Island another day paid off. We had excellent yellowtail fishing again and it started right at daylight with a big school of yellows. Most of the fish were caught on yo-yo irons with everything working including some jigs brought by WON rep John Beath. They are called Darts and we have seen them work really well for tuna offshore, but never really used them for yellowtail. They worked great. We got all the yellowtail we needed in a short time this morning. After that we drifted close to the island for halibut and we had some success. We landed 16 good-size halibut, with some fish weighing up to 25 pounds. We are heading north to fish the coast tonight and finish the trip. More tomorrow, Capt Art

Hey anglers, Another excellent day of fishing at Cedros Island! We had similar action today on the same grade of fish. All the fish are in excess of 20 pounds and today John Curtis from the UK landed a 41-pound yellowtail. We don’t quite have our fill of yellowtail so we are going to stay another day and fish for yellows in the morning and then try drifting for halibut and white sea bass for the rest of the day. We weighed all the options and got an update on the weather forecast for the next few days and decided to stay where the weather is calm and the fishing is good. Our only other option was to travel 320 miles noeth to try for albacore and the reports aren’t favorable and the weather is going to deteriorate offshore. So rather than ending the trip on a sour note we will end it here in calm weather. All the regulars from past WON trips want to say hello to the Balades brothers–we all miss you guys! Looking forward to having you back aboard next year. More tomnorrow, Capt Art

Hey anglers, We had an excellent day fishing at Cedros Island today! We caught yellowtail in the 20-30 pound class. The primary method was a fly-line mackerel or a sardine on 30-40 pound test line. The weather was great as we were fishing in the lee of Cedros with sunny skies and calm seas. We have some first-timers on board from Virginia that had a great day. Brooks Giller and his dad Paul did well, and Uncle Fernando Melendez had some fun today. Grandpa Fernando Melendez from Chula Vista arranged for the family to go on this trip to celebrate Brooks’ 15th birthday tomorrow (Sept 19). What a great gift! We are happy to have them aboard. More tomorrow from Cedros Island as we are staying another day. Capt Art

Hey anglers, We arrived at Cedros Island this afternoon. We didn’t make very good speed above the island so we didn’t get much fishing time today. We got a sample of 20-pound yellowtail and everyone got to wet a line and get acclimated. We are going to try for mackerel tonight to top our bait suply. More tomorrow, Capt Art

Anglers: The boat left yesterday on a 4-day fishing trip. Nasty weather on the albacore grounds helped make up Capt Kevin’s mind to fish at San Benito Island for nice yellowtail action. His report later today!

976-TUNA Open by Bill Roecker

September 12th, 2007|Uncategorized|

Searcher arrived at Fisherman’s Landing September 12 under owner-skipper Art Taylor’s hand, after a five-day 976-TUNA open charter.

“We fished albacore for a day,” said Art, “and then went down to Cedros Island, where we fished at the South End and up near the North End on the lee side.”

Tim James took top spot aboard the 976-tuna chartered Searcher tripIn his blog, Art wrote, “We made it to Cedros Island and caught some mackerel for bait last night. We fished the south end of the island in the morning and caught a few good-grade yellowtail. We left there mid-morning and moved up the lee to try a spot or two. The report from the day before was favorable so we made a move.

“We arrived at a spot where we have done really well in the past and had excellent fishing for mixed grade yellowtail. Most of the fish are in the 20-pound range with a few smaller. The primary method used was flyline mackerel or sardine with 30 or 40 pound test line. There were a few fish caught on dropper loops on the bottom.”

Tim James of Westminster won first place for a 37.8-pound albacore. He said he got it with a sardine on a 2/0 Flyliner hook, 25-pound Ande line on a Daiwa 40 reel and a Calstar 870 rod.

Tim’s brother Chuck James of LaPine, OR won second place for a 30.7-pounder, and John Wilmore of Temecula won third place for a 30-pound longfin.
