Sep 28 (4 day) Matt Boone Private Charter

September 28th, 2022|Captain Mike's Blog, Trip Reports|

Hello anglers,

We started in the yellowfin tuna and dorado area south of San Diego this morning. It didn’t take long to find a kelp paddie that had a nice school of dorado. It was easy to get a bite with a live sardine on 25# line. Now we’re looking for some tuna.

Hello anglers,

We had a few more dorado this afternoon and a chance at some good-size yellowfin tuna. The tuna were 25-40# and we landed them on 25# line and a live sardine.

Sep 27 (Sep 25-29) 4 day Matt Boone Private Charter

September 27th, 2022|Captain Mike's Blog, Trip Reports|

Hello anglers:

We’ve had great fishing again this morning with the same conditions, and plenty of yellowtail for everyone. Flyline live sardines were the best method today.  Lots of big bonito as well (released). So there was constant action all morning.

We are travelling north now and hoping for some action on yellowfin tuna tomorrow.

Sep 26 (Sep 25-29) Matt Boone Private Charter

September 26th, 2022|Captain Mike's Blog, Trip Reports|

Hello anglers,

We had good action this afternoon for 12-20# yellowtail and lots of 6-12# bonito (released). A flylined live sardine was the biggest success, with some being landed on dropper loop rigs and a few on yo-yo lures as well.

It was worth the long ride to get to somewhere we could stop the boat and fish. We are spending the night and trying again tomorrow. Then we’ll head back north to try for dorado and tuna.

Sep 24 (Sep 22-25) 3-day Biter’s Charter

September 26th, 2022|Captain Mike's Blog, Trip Reports|

Good evening,

We saw very little sign of bluefin last night. We caught one 30# by about 10pm, so we went and looked in a new area and saw very little there as well.

We opted to spend the morning doing some cod drifts for some excellent quality bottom grabbers.  This afternoon we slid back offshore and and saw incredible sign of 30-300# fish, but they weren’t biting though they were right where we looked last night.  We scratched a few 40-80# bluefin and a few nice yellowfin.

We’re going to try catch a few after sundown before we have to go home.

Sep 23 (Sep 22-25) 3-day Biter’s Charter

September 24th, 2022|Captain Mike's Blog, Trip Reports|

Good morning,

We got on scene at about 9pm last night and scratched throughout the night.  Pretty much had opportunity from sun down to sun up on a mix of 30-40lb bluefin and yellowfin. Fun fishing.  The anglers that stayed up all night did well.  We are still seeing a little bit this morning with the sun coming up now.

The early angler gets the tuna!

Good evening,

Although our sign of bluefin and yellowfin disappeared throughout the day, we were still able to boat a few dorado this afternoon.  And just now the fish are starting to pop up.  We finally caught our first day time tuna here we’re hoping for some more tonight.

GOT BLUEFIN?

And looking for ways to prepare it for friends and family?

We asked our own Chef Josh for a sauce recipe that is sure to please!

  • 3 stalks green onion, cut into thirds

  • 3 cloves garlic, smashed

Get pan hot on high heat.

Add Mirin to cook off alcohol.

Add soy sauce, water, onions, garlic, ginger and bring to boil. Reduce to rolling simmer.

Cook for about five to ten minutes to let flavors infuse. Then add honey and cream.

Cook for three more minutes, then add slurry to thicken. Strain to finish.

Sep 21 (Sep 19-22) Private Charter FD Rover

September 21st, 2022|Captain Mike's Blog, Trip Reports|

Good morning,

We saw a good sign of bluefin right after dark, then we lost track of them, and the weather came up.  We got a few bites and landed one nice one.  We put the anchor down and got some good sleep.

We see the bluefin again this morning though we aren’t catching it.  But we found a kelp with some nice dorado, and so we’re pretty happy about that.
