Jul 29 (Extended 1.5 day trip)

July 30th, 2021|Captain Mike's Blog, Trip Reports|

Good afternoon anglers,

We decided to try our hand at this local bluefin. It hasn’t been biting well lately.  As advertised, it was very good sign of the fish but  very hard to get a bite. Lots of foamers of 40-70lb fish.

We managed to get a few bites on the colt snipers and the poppers on the foamers. Unfortunately, we went 0 for our first 10 or so on bites.  We got a shot at a sundowner thought and managed to land our last three fish. They were hooked before the sun went down and landed in the dark.  They’re all about 50-60lbs.

Going kelping tomorrow,

Captain Mike and the boys

Good evening anglers,

We had a tough day finding kelps. It was a bit choppy and the lighting was poor . We did find a few kelps this afternoon and were able to scratch up some yellowtail along with a dorado.
We saw some yellowfin and bluefin today and had a small window of opportunity, but didn’t land any.

Good morning anglers,

We had some more action this morning on yellowtail and are seeing some more dorado in the same zone as yesterday.  The traffic is starting to get congested here though making it difficult to work.  We’ve pieced together a morning however.

We are going to make a move and change scenery this afternoon to get set up for tomorrow.  Hopefully we run into something on the way.

Guadalupe Island Fishing and Tackle Update

July 26th, 2021|Did You Know?|

Trip #11 is headed to Guadalupe Island (and there is one spot open)! Click the link for date, prices, and Guadalupe Island fees.

Recent fishing reports from the island describe yellowfin tuna in the 70-100# range, and yellowtail in the 20# class.

Best methods for catching these fish have been to flyline a sardine with 60# test and 60# fluorocarbon to match, with 1/0 and 2/0 circle hooks.

Don’t leave the dock without:

  • Valid passport
  • Rod/reel outfits to include two-2-speed outfits with 60-80# test.
  • Booking that last spot!

Good morning anglers,

We’ve had steady action on the yellowtail today. Lots of biting fish around this morning and so we’re putting together a nice day so far.  We’ve had a few dorado in the mix as well. Most of the yellowtail are 10-12 lbs, some smaller and a handful or two are 20lbs.

Hoping for some more this afternoon,

Captain Mike and the boys

Lots of action and lots of fun!

Good evening anglers,

We had some more action this afternoon on the yellowtail.  Lots of bites, lots of fun.  We ran out of fish the direction we were going and had to flip around so we had a little bit of an afternoon lull. But we got back on the right before dark. They didn’t bite but we threw our kelp buoy on a kelp that was loaded right before the sun went down. We’re hoping they’re still there in the morning.

We saw a little bit of bluefin this afternoon as well. There were schools of 20lbers and some schools of 100lbers.  We’re going to try and flat fall for a little after dinner. We’ll check back in the morning.

Good morning anglers,

We’ve had some good action on the yellowtail. Most of the fish are 10-15lbs.  There is a sign of dorado and yellowfin on these kelps too. We’ve managed to catch a few, but the yellowtail seemed too aggressive to catch many.

Captain Mike and the boys

Here’s a sample from our first stop

Good evening anglers,

The yellowtail action continued for most of the afternoon.  We had a little lull, but we got back on them.  We are starting to see some small schools of mixed bluefin and yellowfin now as well. We just boated a couple.

We have a little bit of time to flat fall tonight. We’ve got one flat fall fish on the boat and good fish swimming through us here now.

Manny caught this 30lber on a flylined sardine right before sundown

Good morning anglers,

We had a very long afternoon yesterday with lots of non-biting fish, but we scraped up a few 25-40lbers throughout the day.  It was a very frustrating day.  However, we had another very good opportunity on the flat falls last night with 100-200lbers.  We had a window of opportunity from 12-3am where they were biting pretty good.

Here’s Teresa with a 184# bluefin she landed amidst all the chaos!

Good evening anglers,

We made a move this morning after our flat fall bite to look for some biting bluefin. We found plenty of bluefin, just not biting ones. They seem to be only biting at night right now. We scratched up some nice 15-20lb yellowtail in our travels.

This evening we’re on some 50-150lb bluefin. We have a few on deck and a few hanging. We’re going to drift this out until we have to go home.
