Trip #28: Oct 10-17 (7 day) Ultra-limited Load

October 14th, 2020|Captain Mike's Blog, Trip Reports|

Good evening anglers,

We had a very long morning driving around looking for these big bluefin. They pulled a “no show” until late afternoon. We got on them about 4pm and they wanted to bite pretty good, especially right before the sun went down. Here’s a few from today’s catch. We’re going to be looking for a kelp in the morning and fishing for yellowtail in the afternoon somewhere on the beach.

Trip #28: Oct 10-17 (7 day) Ultra-limited Load

October 12th, 2020|Captain Mike's Blog, Trip Reports|

Good morning anglers,

We’ve had a steady pick on 30-50lb bluefin this morning. We’re seeing some incredible sign here today. It’s not very easy to get a bite but the fly lined bait on 25lb seems to be the best method. Some guys are getting bites on 40lb. But we have lots of casualties. We’ll see what this afternoon brings.

Good evening anglers,

We started sliding down south and ran into some bigger bluefin this afternoon. We got lots of bites but only managed to land a few. But it was a very good sign. We’re going to give this another whirl tomorrow and see if we can’t get everyone one of these big bluefiin.

Trip #28: Oct 10-17 (7 day) Ultra-limited Load

October 11th, 2020|Captain Mike's Blog, Trip Reports|

Good evening anglers,

We had a very frustrating slow morning, however our afternoon stop made up for it all. We had a nice steady plunker on 30-50lb bluefin with 50-70lb yellowfin mixed in. It was tough to get a bite on anything heavier than 25lb making it very difficult to land these fish this morning. Our stop this afternoon we were able to get bites on 40 and 50lb test. We’re going to give it another shot tomorrow.

Trip #27: Oct 4-10 (6 day) Ultra-limited Load

October 10th, 2020|Captain Mike's Blog, Trip Reports|

Good morning anglers,

We made a pit stop on the way home today on the beach. We got some action on yoyo jigs on some bigger yellowtail. The anglers working at it were rewarded nicely with a few 20-25lb yellowtail to go along with a few bottom grabbers. We’re going to give it another hour and then pack up and head home.

Trip #27: Oct 4-10 (6 day) Ultra-limited Load

October 8th, 2020|Captain Mike's Blog, Trip Reports|

Good morning anglers,

We slid down the beach for some action and we got it. We had some tough fishing conditions and the yellowtail aren’t too eager yet this morning but we’re scratching some 12-18lb yellowtail. It’s sonar fishing up and down the beach. The best methods have been with the lures, like a surface iron or yoyo lure.

Good evening anglers,

We were able to get a few more yellowtail through the sea lions this afternoon before the wind came up. There is good sign in this section of coast, it’s just tough to fish when it’s windy. We will be looking up the beach tomorrow for some more action before we have to call it a trip.

October 8th, 2020|Captain Mike's Blog, Tackle Tip Thursday|

Tackle Tip Thursday is here! Today we have a special guest, Billy from Fisherman’s Landing Tackle Shop. Billy tells us what’s hot right now for tuna fishing and surface skipping. Must have lures for this to work, and most any lure will work: Surface Iron, Nomad dartwing, hydro pencil, etc. Also Billy suggests using a long rod. Billy was using a CalStar 100J.  Stay hooked here for all the latest Tackle Tips.

Thank you so much Billy and Fisherman’s Landing Tackle Shop for the great Tackle Tip!

Trip #27: Oct 4-10 (6 day) Ultra-limited Load

October 7th, 2020|Captain Mike's Blog, Trip Reports|

Good evening anglers,
We had a bit of a travel day today. We had beautiful weather coming down, and it’s getting warmer the further down we get. We did check a few kelps on the way down and got a good one at about 4pm for all the dorado we needed. We’ll be fishing yellowtail on the beach tomorrow.

Good evening anglers,

We had a long day of looking at jumbo bluefin tuna. It was very tough to get a bite all morning. But we finally got it together late in the day and managed to boat 7 of these beauties. Six of them were over 200lbs, and the biggest was 291#. Most of them came on the kite. We did get one fish on a knife jig though. We’re going to start sliding south, looking for a dorado kelp. We’re hoping for some action tomorrow.
