Trip 12: 3-day (Aug 16-19) Capt Potatohead Memorial and Fundraiser

Hello anglers,

It was a great day of fishing for us today. We drifted for the majority of the day, with a chance to hook and land a nice yellowfin tuna. There were slow periods where it was tough to get a bite, but then also fast periods where it was easy to get a bite. Most importantly, lots of fun was had by all.

We are spending the night a trying again tomorrow. Here is Jack B and Justin with a nice tuna.

Trip 12: 3 day (Aug 16-19) Capt Potatohead Memorial and Fundraiser

Hello anglers,

We’re enjoying steady action this morning on 15-25 pound yellowfin tuna. Everyone has had a chance to land a few. The weather is calm, and there’s lots of fun and teasing banter on deck this morning. Dickie is smiling today. Here is John A with Capt Mike and a nice yellowfin hooked by Capt Art on a Seeker Rods. Thanks for the great equipment from Seeker!

More later, Capt Art and Team Searcher

Trip 12: 3 day (Aug 16-19) Capt Potatohead Memorial and Fundraiser

Hello all,

We left on our annual Capt Potatohead trip today. We’ve got lots of regular customers that attend this trip each year. The tuna fishing has been great right in our backyard–25 miles from home–so we came out here for our first afternoon of fishing. We saw several schools of tuna that didn’t want to bit, buy we did get a few samples on a couple stops. We got everyone set up correctly and we will be ready for tomorrow.

Here is Mike Wicen, a long time friend of Dick Uranga, with a nice yellowfin tuna landed on a flat fall lure in the bow. Crewman Armando is there with the assist.

This trip raises funds for pancreatic cancer research in Dick Uranga’s name. His chosen charity was Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PANCAN). It’s a great cause…Purple for the Cure!

Trip 11: 6 day (Aug 10-16) Guadalupe Island

Good morning anglers:

We had a tough morning on the trophy-sized tuna but still managed to wrangle some past the sharks. There were many casualties. Here is John R with his prize after a tough battle.

Good afternoon anglers:

After battling with the sharks all morning we decided to try our luck at some of the school sized fish off the island.  We had a good showing and caught a few of them. After we got our fix of the smaller grade tuna, we looked at a new area and were greeted with some more nice 25-45lb yellowfin as well as a small sample of 25lb yellowtail.  That wraps up our time here at the Guadalupe Island. Tomorrow we will be looking for kelps on our way to Ensenada. Here is a sample of our catch this afternoon.

Trip 11: 6 day (Aug 10-16) Guadalupe Island

Good evening anglers:

These excellent grade yellowfin we have been fishing decided to bite into the afternoon for us today.  The ticket today was a fly-lined sardine on 40lb test and a 2/0 hook. We scratched all day today but had some excellent fishing around lunchtime.

Here is Jim J with a 45lb yellowfin tuna caught late this afternoon.

Trip 11: 6 day (Aug 10-16) Guadalupe Island

Dear anglers:

We have had a great morning on the 40-60lb class yellowfin tuna. They put on quite a show here early. We have definitely suffered a great number of casualties this morning but have boated our fair share of these beautiful fish. Here are Ashley and Ryan with a 60lber they tag teamed. (Editor’s note: Couples that fish together….have some good eating later!)

More from our afternoon’s efforts,

Trip 11: 6 day (Aug 10-16) Guadalupe Island

Good Afternoon anglers,

This morning we had some tough fishing at the island. but still managed to catch a few nice yellowfin tuna. The sharks were not kind to us, so we headed off the island a few miles and managed to put together a very nice catch.

Here is Dale B. with a 50lb class yellowfin he caught on the kite. We have beautiful weather and all day left to fish still.

Trip 11: 6 day (Aug 10-16) Guadalupe Island

Good evening anglers,

After two days of anticipation we arrived at Guadalupe Island.  We were greeted early with multiple jig strikes several miles short of the island.  When we finally arrived on scene around 3:30pm, we located some yellowfin tuna on the machines and promptly kicked the anchor over.  We managed to hook a few with the limited amount of time we had this afternoon.

Here is Ashley M with a nice 56lb yellowfin tuna.

We are going to stay here tonight and see what tomorrow has to offer.
