Aug 17–Trip’s End

August 17th, 2009|Captain Mike's Blog|

Hello anglers, Well we did it again! We were extremely lucky this morning and found a school of 10-20 pound yellowfin tuna that wanted to bite. Everyone had a chance to get all the yellowfin they wanted. And we had a lot of fun! The majority of the tuna were caught with a live sardine with a few fish caught on the iron. The weather is fantastic with very little wind, and the swell we had yesterday has diminshed. Capt Potatohead has been working his behind off, giving away prizes to everyone and providing the entertainment and laughter on the deck. And of course, the crew has had a great time chastising him to no end. I think everyone enjoyed Dick Uranga’s antics and will be back for the same trip next year. I think everyone that visits our web site is familiar with our SONAR program for new anglers. It has been a great success and everyone who has received a gift prior to departing on their trip has been surprised and appreciative to get a gift. We are extremely grateful to all the people that have brought us new customers. Last year’s grand prize winner, Chris Edmundson, was aboard this trip with his Shimano rod and reel combo and he had a really good time. Capt Aaron is bringing the boat out for the next two trips, so look for his blog. I will be on the beach recharging the batteries and catching up with Celia in the office. Capt Art

Hello anglers, Today we started in the area where there was excellent fishing for yellowfin tuna by several boats. Our day started with a few fish under the boat at daylight and we landed 3 bluefin tuna and 3 yellowfin tuna. We had a few jigstrikes in the morning in the same area. Unfortunately the tuna action slowed way down and we started looking for kelp paddies. We found several kelps but most of them had very little fish. It was a pretty slow afternoon with a few small yellowtail and dorado. Wow, things really changed from the day before! We landed 40 yellowtail, 30 yellowfin tuna, three bluefin tuna and seven dorado for our efforts. We are hoping tomorrow is a little more productive. The weather is great with very little wind and almost no swell. More tomorrow, Capt Art

Hello anglers, Today was a great day fishing offshore for yellowfin tuna, yellowtail and dorado. Most of the fish came from one big kelp paddie. The yellowfin tuna are in the 12-25 pound range and the yellowtail are in the same class. Great action today with most of the fish coming on live bait and several fish on the Braid slammer and a few on other heavy yo-yo jigs. There were a few fish on trolling feathers as well. We saw really good signs of the yellowfin tuna and we are excited about the next few trips. On another note if you remember my son Matthew (from working on the boat), he turns 24 years old today–time flies! Happy Birthday Matt! Capt Art p.s. There are still some open spots on upcoming trips. Don’t miss out on some great fishing.

Hey anglers, Today we spent the day at Guadalupe Island. We had a great day yesterday and felt like we wanted to give the group the opportunity to fish for the quality yellowfin tuna that are at Guadalupe. We arrived after breakfast and saw fish right away. They didn’t bite real well. We had to scratch and claw for every fish today. The ones we landed were in the 40-70 pound class and almost everyone landed one. We saw quite a bit of fish today and so everyone had a chance to catch one. The weather was great and we are travelling north to fish offshore tomorrow for more tuna and hopefully get a chance at some big albies. More tomorrow, Capt Art

Aug 12-Day’s end

Hello anglers, Today was the first day of our annual Braid Products trip. We fished an area about 100 miles from San Diego. We were extremely lucky and found a school of bluefin tuna. We landed 58 fish and most of them are in the 35-40 pound range with a few smaller and a few bigger. We might have one fish that will tip the scales at 60 pounds. Everyone has at least one bluefin and they also had several opportunities for more. There were a few 20-25 pound yellowfin tuna landed as well. We are headed for Guadalupe Island for tomorrow to give everyone a chance at a quality yellowfin tuna. Hopefully we can get lucky and get everyone at least one of those 50-70 pond yellowfin. Hello anglers, Today we departed on our annual Braid Products trip. We were headed straight to Guadalupe Island but we received some great news. Those big albacore showed up again and there are some good-size bluefin and yellowfin tuna in the same area. We put the brakes on and we are started in the new area. It is only 80 miles from San Diego so this is great news for our upcoming trips. It is at a perfect distance for the new 1.5 day trip next weekend. More tomorrow, Capt Art

Hello anglers, Today we concentrated on fishing kelp paddies. We had some success, and had plenty of action with small dorado, tuna, and yellowtail. we released a lot of fish today and we still managed to keep around 100 mixed fish: yellowfin tuna, yellowtail, and dorado. Everyone had a lot of fun and plenty of action. The weather was great with calm seas and very little wind. Another successful Let’s Talk Hook-Up Shimano seminar! I am looking forward to doing it again next year as it is great to have people on board that haven’t done a long range trip before and get the exposure to this type of trip. Capt Art
