Tuna Research by Team Searcher and YOU!

January 16th, 2017|Captain Mike's Blog, News|

Sportfishing Association of California and Commerical Passenger Fishing Vessels (CPFV) Collaborate on Tuna Research

SAC logo

San Diego-based Sportfishing Association of CA initiated a collaboration between scientists and recreational anglers.

Tuna caught by you and your fellow recreational anglers now provides resource managers and scientists with valuable data, in addition to gracing the dinner tables of family and friends. These data, collected by the CPFV fleet Captains and crew members, may allow decision-makers at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and California Department of Fish and Wildlife to more effectively manage fisheries in southern California and northern Baja California, Mexico.

Since the 2015 fishing season, Searcher and other CPFVs have been involved in the program which was proposed by the SAC and implemented by Alayna Siddall, SAC’s Director of Science and Communications. The project has Captains and crew members measure tuna (all species) lengths according to a standard protocol and then record them on waterproof data sheets.SAC data sheet

These data can be used to determine total take by weight of tuna in the local region (southern California and northern Baja California, Mexico) and help inform future stock assessments. This information is needed in order to estimate the catch in a more accurate way.

SAC provided the crew member training, all equipment, and data sheets. In addition they process the data, along with CEC Research, and make it available to outside entities such as NOAA and California Department of Fish and Wildlife. Team Searcher is 100% supportive of these efforts that will help protect recreational anglers’ fishing interests.

SAC data gather

Ryan L., Captains Aaron and Art measure and record sizes of these small yellowfin tuna from a 2016 trip.

“We are happy to participate in data collection and be proactive, as resource managers assess stocks and possibly make changes to bag limits. We hope to see an increase in that limit for bluefin tuna in California due to information this program provides.”
–Captain Art

This project will continue through 2017, and hopefully for several years to come. When catch is loaded off Searcher and placed into carts, and before it makes its way to the fish processor, you might notice our crew measuring and recording the lengths of your tuna. Your fish has the potential to benefit the entire fleet and future generations of anglers…just in case you needed even more incentive to get out fishing!

Hauled out on Dec 12.

The crew brought Searcher to Al Larson Boat Yard in San Pedro on Sunday night for an early Monday morning arrival for the haul-out on December 12, 2016.

Capt Art reports that the boat’s hull looks good and the work list has begun!

Coast Guard inspection of the hull takes place on Wednesday, December 14.

Here are just a few items that Art, Aaron, Ryan Stahl, Dan and R2 are getting ready for the USCG inspection: intake screens for saltwater pumps, engine cooling system, all thru-hull valves removed for inspection, all bilges pumped dry, and the life rafts are removed for annual inspection.

In addition the hull is power-washed below the waterline and the sonar dome is cleaned.

“What’s Cookin’ in the Searcher Galley?” – Yellowtail Recipe!

Chef Charley has developed this fresh herb marinade for serving with grilled yellowtail or dorado.  Anglers on our recent trips have been clamoring for the recipe, so that they can prepare their own fresh-caught yellowtail when they return home from their Searcher trip!

sstrip7scottsmile

 Herb Marinated Grilled Yellowtail

Herb Marinade Ingredients
1 bunch flat leaf parsley (rinse and remove stems)
1 bunch cilantro (rinse, ok to leave stems)
1/2 bunch fresh oregano (rinse and use leaves only)
4-5 garlic cloves, cleaned and peeled
1-2 shallots, cleaned and peeled
1 good pinch red pepper flake
The juice of one half of a lime
1 cup of good olive oil (add more or use less, as needed)

  • Blend all ingredients in a food processor to a smooth, thick puree.  Add olive oil as you blend – the end result should be should be pourable.
  • Divide fresh yellowtail filets into 6-8 oz. portions
  • Pour marinade over the filets, marinate for 30-45 minutes in a non-metallic container. The marinade should touch all sides of the fish.
  • Preheat the grill.  Prep your grill for grilling directly over high heat and finishing over indirect high heat.
  • Place your marinated filets over the preheated grill on direct high heat, and salt with a sprinkling of coarse sea salt.
  • Grill for 2-3 minutes per side.
  • After grill marks are evident, place over indirect high heat for 4-7 minutes with the grill lid down.
Serve immediately with your favorite sides. Aboard Searcher we serve this with red pepper risotto and a cilantro lime butter sauce, or rice pilaf accompanied by fresh vegetables (like green and wax beans or roasted Mexican squash) with a garnish of pickled red onions.
