Trip 11Jul 28-31High Desert Comm. Charter July 29 PM Report

July 29th, 2017|Trip Reports|

Hello all,

Plenty of action today on yellowtail, mixed sizes with some small ones that we released and some good size ones that were fun to catch. A few good size dorado were landed as well. We had hoped for some yellowfin tuna associated with common dolphin but we didn’t see any dolphin until the very end of the day with very little light. We hope for a chance at landing some tuna tomorrow.

Here is Capt Aaron with Izzy and a nice size yellowtail on the bow.

The weather is awesome, the forecast looks good again.

More tomorrow,

Trip 11 Jul 28-31 High Desert Comm. Charter Jul 29 AM Report

July 29th, 2017|Trip Reports|

Hello all,

We have great weather today with calm seas!!!  We have managed to stay busy this morning with some mixed size yellowtail and dorado. It doesn’t take long for the crew in the crow’s nest of on the roof to find a kelp paddie in this weather. We have stopped several times and landed some fish at almost every stop. We will have an awesome day of fishing if this keeps up.

Mike Gauman landed this good size dorado this morning!

“I Brought Home the Fish–Now What?!”

July 29th, 2017|Captain Mike's Blog|

With yellowtail and dorado hitting the deck, we have an idea sure to impress family and friends at home. Make dinner!

Our very own Chef Charley Erichsen developed this fresh herb marinade for serving with grilled yellowtail or dorado.  Anglers on our recent trips have been clamoring for the recipe after enjoying it from Charley’s galley.

sstrip10-2017IjudyytHerb-Marinated Grilled Yellowtail or Dorado

Herb Marinade Ingredients
1 bunch flat leaf parsley, rinsed and stems removed
1 bunch cilantro, rinsed (ok to leave stems)
1/2 bunch fresh oregano, rinsed and stems removed
4-5 garlic cloves, cleaned and peeled
1-2 shallots, cleaned and peeled
1 good pinch red pepper flake
Juice of a half of a lime
1 cup of good olive oil (add more or use less, as needed)

  • Blend all ingredients in a food processor to a smooth, thick puree. Add olive oil as you blend – the end result should be should be pourable.
  • Divide fresh yellowtail or dorado fillets into 6-8 oz. portions
  • Pour marinade over the fillets, marinate for 30-45 minutes in a non-metallic container. The marinade should touch all sides of the fish.
  • Preheat the grill. Prep your grill for grilling directly over high heat and finishing over indirect high heat.
  • Place your marinated fillets over the preheated grill on direct high heat, and salt with a sprinkling of coarse sea salt.
  • Grill for 2-3 minutes per side.
  • After grill marks are evident, place over indirect high heat for 4-7 minutes with the grill lid down.

Serve immediately with your favorite sides. Aboard Searcher we serve this with red pepper risotto and a cilantro lime butter sauce, or rice pilaf accompanied by fresh vegetables (like green and wax beans or roasted Mexican squash) with a garnish of pickled red onions. Enjoy, and don’t forget to share your fish story with all who’ll listen!

Trip 10 Jul 23-28 (5-day) July 27 Recap

July 27, 2017

Hello all,

Everyone had a chance to land a good size yellowtail this morning! The bite didn’t last as long as we hoped but it was definitely fun while it lasted! We headed offshore to look for kelp paddies with tuna and dorado after lunch. We found some good size kelps and one had some dorado on it but they were too small to keep. We helped the resource out by releasing a lot of them. We did that yesterday as well: releasing lots of small yellowtail throughout the day. It is great to see everyone join in on the conservation of these stocks. We will continue to do that on all of our trips.

Check out Logan Flexington from La Mirada with his yellowtail catch. He and his dad Chris were first time Searcher clients and this was Logan’s longest trip so far. They were great to have on board and look forward to the next time.

Back in the morning,

Hello all,

We had a little action on better size yellowtail this morning!! Once again live bait was the method of choice. Judy Kanouse landed this Jackpot contender on a live sardine and 30 pound Izorline. Capt Aaron gets the assist. Hoping for a few more fish today. Our plan is to go offshore this afternoon on our way north and find some tuna and dorado.

July 26, 2017

Hello all,

We had an action packed day today with plenty of opportunity to land a yellowtail. The fish were 6-25 pounds. We released several of the smaller ones.

The primary method was a live sardine and 30 pound line, and a 2/0 J Hook with a small sliding sinker. There was also a chance for some rockfish as well.

Everyone had fun and plenty of rail time today. Wendy from Izorline landed this nice yellowtail.

Headed north for more fishing time.

Hello anglers,

We travelled north last night and arrived on the coast to try for yellowtail after breakfast. We have had steady action on small yellowtail with a nice mix of better size fish. Tom Fitzgerald landed this nice yellowtail on a live sardine and 30 pound Izorline and a 2/0 Owner hook.

The weather is awesome with a light breeze and sunny skies! We plan on staying here all day and we hope to continue to have action with everyone busy at the rail.

Trip 10 Jul 23-28 (5-day)July 25 Evening Report

July 25th, 2017|Trip Reports|

Hello all,

The highlight today was a few nice dorado on kelp paddies. We travelled south down to 330 miles from home for some yellowfin tuna action. Unfortunately, the tuna moved without telling us where they went. We stopped and tried several kelp paddies. Janice K.  landed this nice male dorado with help from Capt Ryan. You can see we had great weather again today.

Dinner was stuffed pork loin with fennel and apples with a dijon sauce. Roasted brocollini and carrots, white beans and fresh shallot bread. It was absolutely delicious.

More tomorrow,

Team Searcher
