September 18 mid-day report

September 18th, 2014|Captain Mike's Blog|

Hello anglers: Well they say timing is everything, and ours has been bad the last two days. We arrived to the tuna area yesterday morning and right when the fish started to show up, the Navy asked us to leave the area as we were in their live firing range. So we went north 10 miles where there wasn’t much fish. Once the range was open the wind came up and it blew 25 knots, so we had to quit fishing and hide for the night.
This morning we saw the biggest school of the trip and it wouldn’t bite. The weather came down so we could work and the morning has been the best time for the tuna. We spent the morning in the zone with not much to show for it. We moved 20 miles to another area and found another good school of tuna and that school wouldn’t bite either. But we are sill working at it!sep 13-19 kurt and paul

September 16 mid-day report (6-day trip)

September 16th, 2014|Captain Mike's Blog|

Hello anglers: We accomplished our goal this morning with excellent dorado fishing on a kelp paddie. Everyone had a great time and got all the dorado they needed. Most of the fish were in the 10-12 pound range with a few stand-outs. Penn University rep Steve Carson weighed a 24-pound dorado, and there were a few more in that class. Pictured is Capt Aaron and Steve Goldblatt aka Goldy with a 20-pounder. sep 13-19 goldys doradoWe are blessed to have Capt Aaron in the mast with his great eyes. He spotted the kelp paddie from 3 miles away. Nice work, Capt Aaron! We are headed northwest the rest of the day and night, arriving in the tuna grounds tomorrow morning.

September 15 (Penn Reels Open)

September 15th, 2014|Captain Mike's Blog|

Hello anglers: Mission acomplished today with action on yellowtail along the coast. We found a mixed grade fish in a couple different places. One spot held 12-16 pounders and the other spot yielded 15-25 pound fish. We had lots of action and a long day at the rail. Everyone had a good time. Pictured is Kurt Pedersen from Surprise, AZ. with a nice size yellowtail.sep 13-19 pedersen
The weather was awesome today with sunny skies and calm seas. The humidity was up with the approaching storm. We are headed north tonight to avoid any problems. We hope to be in the tuna grounds early day after tomorrow.

September 14 (Penn Reels’ Open 6-day)

September 14th, 2014|Captain Mike's Blog|

Hello anglers: We fished the coast for yellowtail today. We saw quite a bit of fish throughout the day. Unfortunately it didn’t bite as well as we had hoped. We had some fun and had a chance at a few fish. We got the kinks out and learned about the tackle. We are ready for tomorrow and the prospects look good. Wish us luck.
