Art Taylor’s last trip to Cedros Island for the season paid off with a catch of yellowtail and a brace of white seabass. The Searcher’s 14 anglers, some from as far away as Michigan, enjoyed a five-day trip with at least one night bite.

Five AM was the time when the whites came up, both on dropper loop rigs with squid. The best one won first place for a Duane Weston of Vista, who said he got his with 16 ounces of lead on his loop. He used a 5/0 Mustad hook on 100-pound P-Line, a Tiagra 30 reel and a Calstar 6455 XXH rod.

The other white won second place for Mike Meinecke of Otter Lake, MI. It weighed 30.4 pounds. Russ Baker of Millington, MI won third place for a 29.8-pound yellowtail.

Searcher angler, Kevin Justen, recently served a grilled yellowtail lunch to Huntington Beach Fire Station 1-Gothard using his Cedros Island yellowtail. The universally loved marinade…italian dressing!

Oct 18–MId-day report

Hello anglers, Today we are started off with some early morning action on some of the better-size yellowtail and two nice-size white sea bass. Some anglers go their whole fishing career without catching a white sea bass and Mike Meineke from Michigan landed a 35-pounder. It’s his biggest fish ever and his first 5-day trip. We arrived at yesterday’s hot spot a little earlier today and the fish were biting when we got there. We’ve had steady action since 10:30 am and we are thinking about making a move up the island to concentrate on bigger size yellowtail. More later, Capt Art

Oct 17–Mid-day report

Hello anglers, Here’s our mid-day report from Cedros Island. It was a little on the slow side this morning with 20 yellowtail landed (for 14 anglers) and several small fish released. We are patiently waiting for the afternoon. We’re getting everyone on the correct drag settings and any doubts out of the way since we have a few first-timers aboard. The highlight so far has been Bruce Gothar from Menifee, California. He has landed two yellowtail in the 30 pound class on a dropper loop set-up. More later, Capt Art

Oct 17–Day’s end

Hello anglers, We had steady action for about 2-1/2 hours after lunch today and we landed 60 more yellowtail in the 12 to 16 pound range. We saw some good schools and most of them bit a little. The primary method was yo-yo iron with a few fish on dropper loop and fly-line live sardine. The weather is awesome with light winds and cool temperatures. We hope to duplicate our day tomorrow with a few more of the better-grade fish. We didn’t see a whole lot of the bigger fish today so we are hoping tomorrow is the right day. Capt Art

Hello anglers, We arrived at Cedros Island at 3 pm and with good water conditions, we checked out the weather side. Unfortunately we didn’t connect on the fish. There was a tremendous amount of life with bait, birds, and dolphins but no fish. We are spending the night and we are hopeful for tomorrow with good reports from the south end. More tomorrow. 2010 SONAR winner selected today!

Since it was our last trip of the year, Capt Art pulled a name out of the hat…with all the names of the SONAR winners throughout 2010. Our 2010 SONAR winner is Ben Van Camp of Manhattan Beach, California. Ben brought a friend fishing this year and won (a Shimano rod/reel and a spot on a 3-day trip in 2011 Congrats!
