Best Catch Yet by Bill Roecker

August 22nd, 2010|Uncategorized|

Art Taylor brought his Searcher home from a five-day trip with 22 anglers that produced the best yellowtail catch of the season so far: limits of mossbacks that one angler weighed out at an average of 36 pounds. At least a dozen fish were 40 pounds or more, and a huge halibut graced the bag of forkies.

“It was Cedros Island at its best,” said Art. “Each angler had a personal best. It was world-class fishing. They were fish of a lifetime!”

George Guardiano of San Diego fished up a 42-pound halibut out of the congregation of toad yellows. He said he got it with a green mackerel baited on a 4/0 Gamakatsu hook tied to 40-pound P-Line. He used a TLD 30 reel and a Calstar 6460 H rod and brought the big flattie up to gaff in about ten minutes.

“He swallowed it, and I didn’t know he was there until I set the hook,” said George.

Rob Geiger of Simi Valley got a 43-pound yellowtail for first place. He said he took it with a mackerel flylined on a 7/0 Mustad hook and 40-pound Izorline. He used 65-pound Power Pro backing on an Avet JX reel and a Calstar 700 H rod.

Jim Hartwick of Harbor City won second place for a 42.6-pound yellowtail, and he also tied for third with a 41.6-pounder. Mart Pierpoint got one that weighed 41.6 pounds to get the other half of the tie.

The yellowtail catch may have been the best for Captain Taylor since 1988, when Bill Roecker went to Cedros with him, where they found 40-pounders thick as flies in a barnyard. That story is in Roecker’s forthcoming long range book, due from the printer right after Thanksgiving.

Hello anglers, It’s been another great day of fishing for those big yellows at Cedros! It has been a while since we’ve had the opportunity to catch this grade of fish and particularly for two days in a row. We didn’t have as much horsepower today due to a little fatigue for the passengers and the crew, especially the captain. Those fish seemed heavier to me today! We saw the same scenario as yesterday with most of the fish taken on fly-line live bait. There were also a few fish caught on the surface iron for those who worked at it. There was a dry spell in the middle of the day again and a few fish late in the day. However it was a fantastic trip and one we will remember for a while. We are headed home now and don’t plan on stopping tomorrow due to the down hill current going up the coast. Our ETA on Sunday is 6 a.m. More later, Capt Art

Art called in a report, but could only stay on the line a few minutes. The deck was busy! They are fishing at the south end of Cedros Island and world-class yellowtail are biting. These are 30-40# fish and they are mostly catching them on 40-60# line with a fly-lined live bait. Look for a full report later when things calm down (but we hope they don’t!) p.s. Want to have your chance at a yellowtail like this? We have openings on 5-day trips coming up!

August 19-Mid-day report

August 19th, 2010|Captain Mike's Blog|

Hello anglers, This morning was one to remember with phenomenal yellowtail fishing starting before daylight! We started catching fish on dropper loops and 60 and 80 pound test line. After daylight the fish went to the surface and we started landing them on flyline live bait with 40 or 50 pound line and surface iron. Almost all the fish are 30 pounds or better. We don’t see bites like this very often and that is why this is so special. Most people would be happy if they had a chance to land one of this grade fish, but to have a chance at multiple fish this size doesn’t happen very often. If you haven’t landed a 30 pound yellowtail before, it’s time to jump on a trip and get down here! More later, Capt Art (note from the office: can you tell this is his FAVORITE kind of fishing?!)

August 19-Day’s end

August 19th, 2010|Captain Mike's Blog|

Hello anglers, What a incredible day of fishing! Cedros island is at its best, with quality fish every where we stopped. We had a pause in the action, but only for a few hours while we looked around for the school fish that has been the predominant fish here the past two months. We didn’t locate it in the usual spots. We went back to an area that produced those big fish in the late afternoon yesterday for a few boats and they were there again. So we ended the day with some action, landing some of the same size fish as this morning. There something special about a yellowtail that big. They are really cool looking and you can see why they are so strong the way they are built. All the fish we landed today will easily average 30 pounds. Wow! We are back in the morning hot spot this evening and hope for a repeat of this morning. More tomorrow, Capt Art

Hello anglers, We travelled to Cedros Island and arrived at 4 pm. We found an area of good-grade yellowtail this afternoon and got a sample of what we hope will be the size fish we have a chance at for the next two days. We landed 16 of these fish and three smaller ones, and we lost a few. The average size is 35 pounds. For some people this can be a fish of a lifetime! There has been a change in the fishing here with more and more of these premium-grade fish being caught more frequently. The weather is good and so we have high hopes for tomorrow. Remarkably there is room on our next trip with only 10 people on board. It is our ultra limited load trip and is a confirmed “go.” So if you want to catch a fish of a lifetime join us on this great trip with plenty of rail space and your own cabin. More tomorrow, Capt Art
