Hello anglers, Well this is not exactly how we wanted to end the month of August. We fished the local area at 55 miles south of San Diego. Very tough fishing today with not much fish seen or caught by the fleet. We left last night with high hopes after the reports from the fleet yesterday. Average scores were 60 fish per boat. Unfortunately for us today wasn’t the same. We only landed 4 bluefin tuna and 1 yellowtaill today . The weather was great but it didnt’ seem to help. We will take an E for effort today. go in tonight and regroup to get back out there tomorrow night. More then, Capt Art

Searcher Tests Nearby Yellowfin by Bill Roecker

August 30th, 2010|Uncategorized|

The big schools of yellowfin tuna that began arriving last Friday drew Art Taylor and his 16 Searcher three-day anglers to try fishing in a tongue of warm water below Ensenada.

“It was clean and 67.5 degrees,” said Art, “and we had jig strikes over a 45-mile stretch on mixed grade tuna and skipjack. We also got some fish on kelps and bird schools on the first day when it was calm. The good fishing extended from about 95 to 130 miles south.”

The trip was sponsored by Accurate, who sent Gary Gillingham along as chartermaster, with 12 sets of loaner rods and reels from the factory.

“They were BX-2 400 and 500 models,” he said. “We also gave away a BX-2 400.”

Gary Cotter of Santa Barbara won first place for a 22.6-pound tuna. He said he got it with a sardine on a 2/0 ringed Owner Super Mutu hook on 20-pound Seaguar fluorocarbon and 20-poundIzorline. He used a Trinidad 16 reel and a Calstar 700 ML rod.

Pate Machlachlan of Port Townsend, WA tied with Willy Lewis of Mission Hills for second place, as both men had 22.4-pound yellowfin.

Hello anglers, Today was a different day all together. The weather picked up a little and the fishing slowed because of it. The good news it is a temporary weather thing with the forecast showing diminishing conditions for our next trip. There are still good signs of yellowfin tuna around with jigstrikes over a really wide area–from 130 miles to 95 miles today. There weren’t any big scores but everyone saw fish and caught a few. We caught 27 yellowfin for our 16 passengers today. I want say a special thanks to Gary Gillingham from Accurate Products. He was a big help and the gear he brought for our customers was top notch. A special thanks to Jack Neilson and the rest of the Accurate gang for providing a mid-size reel that We raffled off last night. You didn’t even have to catch the biggest fish. You just put your number in the hat and won a reel form Accurate with a retail value of $580. Incredibly generous! Thanks again. Looking forward to another Accurate Products sponsored trip next year. There are a few spots open on our next trip leaving tomorrow afternoon, Capt Art

Hello anglers, We had fantastic yellowfin tuna fishing today with fish 8 to 25 pounds. Most of the fish came out of one stop. It was a really good school of fish and they were biting! The longer the stop lasted, the better the grade of fish were landed. We had a few other stops throughout the day with a few fish associated with kelp paddies and fish on the troll. We are staying the night and we will try again for these tuna. The weather is good and we are looking forward to tomorrow. Capt Art

Yellowfin tuna show!

August 27th, 2010|Captain Mike's Blog|

Hello anglers, Today there was some great news on the offshore scene. Boats at 90 to 100 miles from San Diego caught yellowfin tuna in the 8-20 pound range. It is the first catch made offshore in quite awhile. The report is a good-size area about 15 miles long and 5 miles wide, with a temperature break included. We are headed there and will be there first thing in the morning. Hopefully we will have good timing and give our group a chance at some tuna. We have some room on a 1.5 day trip next week and if this bite continues, it would be a perfect opportunity for some offshore action. We also have some space available on our 3-day Labor day trip. More tomorrow, Capt Art

August 27th, 2010|Uncategorized|

A five-day limited load trip with only ten passengers aboard the Searcher arrived at Fisherman’s Landing August 27. The trip was skippered by Aaron Remy and visited Cedros Island for some extra-large yellowtail.

“It was good fishin’,” said Remy at the dock. “The weather was hot and sunny, the way it’s supposed to be.”

Jennifer Funk of San Pedro fished with jigs, and yoyoed up a toady 43.6-pound mossback on a Salas 6X Jr. in blue and white for first place. She said she fished a 50-pound Izorline and 65-pound Power Pro Spectra and an Avet HX reel and a Calstar 760 M rod. The fight lasted ten minutes.

Howdy anglers, Our efforts to be a tuna boat were not completely a loss. We managed to capture a single bluefin tuna, and we did it at the last minute of our day. So we’re on our way home and will come back out for a 3-day trip with Capt Art at the helm. The weather is acceptable and the forecast looks favorable. So good angling and hope to see ya on the water soon, Capt Aaron
