August 1-Day’s end

August 1st, 2010|Captain Mike's Blog|

Hello anglers, Well today wasn’t that productive in the “catching” department. We saw a tremendous sign of albacore with a few scattered yellowfin mixed in, but the majority of the fish didn’t bite. We landed 15 albacore and 5 yellowfin tuna. Most of the other counts were around 50 fish average per boat. Once again the quality is great, with all the albies 30 plus pounds. The yellowfin are over 25 pounds. We are staying the night and fishing here tomorrow. Hoping for better results. We’re encouraged by the sign of fish and the fact they are biting! Capt Art

ALBACORE! biting ones…(mid-day report)

July 31st, 2010|Captain Mike's Blog|

Hello anglers, We are extremely fortunate today to catch some fatso albacore. They average 30 pounds with some 40 pounders mixed in. We see good signs of fish and they are biting. We currently have 100 fish onboard and plenty of time left to get some more. There are some yellowfin tuna and bluefin tuna mixed in. The weather is calm and so we plan to stay in the area and try tomorow. Hopefully it isn’t a flash in the pan. More later, Capt Art

July 31-Day’s end

July 31st, 2010|Captain Mike's Blog|

Hello anglers, We ended up with 103 albies and 11 yellowfin tuna for our afternoon. It was great fishing! The weather is great too. We are staying another day and looking forward to the oppoetunity to catch this quality albacore again. I pondered travelling tonight ro Cedros Island to fish for yellowtail tomorrow for about 2 or 3 seconds, and then I realized I might have a mutiny on my hands if I left this area! We had our evening meeting to go over today and game plan for tomorrow and we made a toast to our old friend Mark Seals who came on this trip every year and sadly passed away in January. He was here in spirit today and would have enjoyed catching these fish a lot. More tomorrow, Capt Art

Cedros Island Remains Hot

The yellowtail at Cedros Island are still chewing bait, jigs and just about anything else that falls into the water. Art Taylor took his Searcher anglers there on a five-day trip, and they loaded up on ‘tails before heading up the beach to try some rockfishing. A couple of nice white seabass bit in the wee hours at the island, and one of them made it into the jackpot.

Mike Lee of San Francisco won first place for a 27-pound yellowtail. He said he bagged it at two AM on the dropper loop, about the same time the white seabass came through. He baited a sardine on a 6/0 Eagle Claw hook on 60-pound Izorline. He used a TLD 30 reel and a Seeker 655 Black Steel rod.

Raul Alarcon of Garden Grove won second place for the larger fish of his pair of whites, a 24-pounder. The other one went 22.6 pounds. Both came on the dropper loop. Tom Kang of Huntington Beach won third place for a 23-pound yellowtail.
