Hello anglers, One of our valuable customers Jim Tindaro of La Jolla made a suggestion for the blog that I thought I would follow up on. Jim said that yes, it would have been nice to catch some fish, but the bottom line was he had a great time meeting great people and enjoying the food that was served. The boat was great and the crew attentive. Everything we could control was great, he said. Jim has his own boat and likes being out on the water. Jim is exactly right that it is the overall experience of a trip like this that makes it a great value and if you catch fish it is a bonus. Obviously I couldn’t agree more. I always tell everyone we are going to have a great time and we might catch a fish or two. Anyway I was grateful to Jim for sharing that with me last night at dinner especially after two long days in the bridge. You can’t say we didn’t try. We went 150 miles southwest of San Diego and then travelled 150 miles northwest to the San Juan which is 190 miles west of San Diego. So we covered some miles in search of a fish. Capt Aaron is going back out on a 4 day trip and likely will go to Cedros Island. Capt Art

Hello anglers, Well what can we say about the last 2 days? We worked our butts off in a different area than the rest of the fleet in hopes of finding something new. We stayed in good water 125 to 150 miles southwest of San Diego, but we didn’t find any fish. Last night we got a report of a sign of albacore out on the San Juan Seamount which was 150 miles from where we were and 190 miles from San Diego. We ran up there for a chance at some albies. It was a gamble but we figured we couldn’t do much worse, so we went for it. Unfortunately we only caught one 12-pound albie. It was something that we needed to check out, but it didn’t pay off. On the positive side there is still incredible yellowtail fishing at Cedros Island, so for those of you planning a trip or already have one planned, the prospects are good on 4 day trips or longer. If you have a shorter trip planned. there is still a good sign of bluefin tuna and albacore at 100 miles from San Diego, and one of these days we’re going to get even with those fish that aren’t biting now. August 8-Mid=day report

August 8th, 2010|Captain Mike's Blog|

Anglers: Capt Art is covering a new area offshore, looking for bluefin and albacore that will bite. He reports this area is also full of life–birds and bait–but he isn’t yet seeing tuna. Meanwhile the old area of non-biting tuna is producing the same as usual…but keep the faith! Things have got to change soon. A full report later, celia

Howdy anglers, Today was a very slow day for us for fishing. The weather was good and all the conditions were right. We saw lots and lots of fish on the sonar and meter, along with some fish on the surface. There is still a good sign of fish so when they decide to bite, there is still plenty of it around. Good luck and hope to see ya on the water, Capt Aaron

Big ‘Dines, Dinky Hooks

Art Taylor brought his Searcher home August 3 after a five-day Izorline trip. Pro-staffer Wendy Tochihara was aboard, and she looked to have as many tuna on the boat as any man. Her best one was a 35.8-pound beauty. She said the albacore seemed to prefer big sardines and small hooks. She got hers with hooks in the 1/0 size.

There was a tie for first place. Larry Hicks of Corona and Chris Alcaraz of West Covina both had 39.2-pound albies, so they split first and second place rewards.

Hicks won the Izorline trophy for the best fish on that product. He got his with a sardine on a 3/0 Mustad hook tied to 30-pound Izorline on a Penn 4/0 reel and a Sabre six and a half-foot rod.

Mike Day of Phoenix won third place for a 38-pound longfin, and Howard Pukini of La Mirada had the trip’s best yellowfin tuna, a 37-pounder.

Hello anglers, WE had another frustrating day today. We saw a lot of fish again that didn’t bite. Most of it is bluefin tuna with a few yellowfin and albacore mixed in. We only had two albies today with 13 yellowfin tuna before we had to head home. The good thing is there is plenty of fish around and at some point I really think we are gong to have some great fishing. We are at the dock for a couple of days and we are leaving on a 1.5 day Thursday and there is plenty of room. There is some albacore at 110 miles and if you are there on the right day, there has been some good fishing in the past couple of days. Capt Art
