Searcher Finds Big Yellowfin by Bill Roecker

Searcher jackpot winners display their big fish at Fisherman's Landing

A couple of days at Guadalupe Island produced some dandy yellowfin in the grande size for Art Taylor and his 17 Searcher anglers, who also fished for dorado on kelps and for yellowtail on the Baja coast. Fishing was pretty good, and they got near-limits on the yellows, and “great dorado fishing” in between, said Art.

Tim James of Westminster got the big one, a fine 111.6-pound yellowfin tuna he described as a “butt-kicker.”

“He took 200 yards of line and then gave me a lot of trouble up by the bow,” said James. “He came up there, too.”

Tim said he baited a sardine on a 3/0 ringed Super Mutu hook tied to 40-pound Seaguar fluorocarbon leader and 50-pound Ande line. He said he used 80-pound Izorline Spectra backing on an Avet HX reel and a custom Calstar 700 H rod by M&M.

Matt Bruce of Mission Viejo bagged an 83.4-pound tuna for second place. Ron Bryan of San Clemente used a new Accurate rod and reel combo to win third place for a 75.8-pounder, and John Curtis of Oxford, England came a long way to catch his honorable mention 74-pound Guadalupe Island yellowfin tuna.

Hello anglers, We looked offshore today and had great weather. Unfortunately there weren’t alot of kelp paddies and the ones we found didn’t have any fish on them. But we enjoyed beautiful conditions all day–71.5-degree, blue water. Our last kelp produced a few small tuna and some nice dorado so the last stop of the trip we had some action. We will be in at 7am tomorrow. Prospects for good fishing on the next trip look good–lots of yellowfin tuna and a few wahoo on the Ridge and good yellowtail on the coast. Looking forward to heading back out tomorrow, Capt Art

Hey anglers, Today we had excellent yellowtail fishing on the coast south of Cedros island. Most of the fish were landed on yo-yo iron blue and white and 50 pound line. There were a few fish caught on live bait. Everyone got what they needed as far as yellowtail is concerned. All the fish are in the 12 to 18 pound range. We travelled north to Cedros for the afternoon to try for those big yellows. Unfortunately we didn’t find very many. We are headed offshore tonight to see if we cant get lucky and find a few more dorado on kelp paddies. The weather is great with very little wind and no sea. More tomorow, Capt Art

Hello anglers, Today we spent offshore looking for dorado on kelp paddies. We were successful finding several kelps, most of which had no fish on them. The conditions were great with good weather and good enough lighting to see a long ways. We did connect on one kelp that had a good school of nice-grade dorado–12 to 20 pounds and most were landed with live bait and 40-pound test. Everyone caught a few and we all had fun doing it. We are headed to the coast tonight and will arrive at daylight tomorrow morning to try for yellowtail. Looking forward to some action, Capt Art p.s. Hello anglers, There is a really good sign of yellowfin tuna at Guadalupe Island! If you can get past the sharks, there is a chance for a 70 to 100 pound one. For some people that is a fish of a lifetime. There is also a few nice-size yellowtail mixed in. Today was slower for us than yesterday. We landed fewer tuna, but the ones we caught were good ones. We are headed east to look for kelp paddies and will be headed up the coast for yellowtail. We accomplished our goal to give everyone a chance at a quality yellowfin tuna. We ended our stay at Guadalupe with a few nice yellowtail on the bottom after dark. There were a few minutes where every bait was a bite. It didn’t last long but we had our chances. Looking forward to catching some good size dorado tomorrow, Capt Art

Searcher is off on a 6-day trip, heading for Guadalupe Island first. News from there later today. Yesterday another boat in the fleet had a good day at Alijos Rocks–50 wahoo and 20 yellowfin tuna up to 90#. (There’s room on our upcoming 7-day trips there!)

Hello anglers, We decided to head straight to Guadalupe Island for our first day of fishing. We arrived around 12:30 and saw a sign of 20-30 pound yellowfin tuna when we got to our first spot. We landed 10 fish right away and then we started to see some bigger fish boil around. We hooked a few and landed a fish around 65 pounds. We got the anchor down and continued to catch those smaller-size fish with an occasional 50 to 80 pound fish for the rest of the afternoon. At about 5 pm everything went quiet. We saw some fish but never landed another one. We ended up with nine of the better-grade fish and 25 of the smaller-size tuna. We also landed five decent-size yellowtail. We hope we can catch a few yellowtail tonight. Not a bad start! We plan to stay the night and see if they want to bite tomorrow. More then, Capt Art
