Searcher Finds ‘Em By The Ton

Art Taylor had the best trip he’s ever had to Guadalupe Island over the five days leading up to July 31, when he docked at Fisherman’s Landing at the end of his Strictly Fishin’ Charter with 25 anglers. They appeared to have near-limits of yellowfin and yellowtail. Hoisting all the contenders at the scales had Taylor sweating happily.

Eric Sallis of Santee won first place in the boat’s jackpot for a 74-pound tuna. He said he bagged it with a sardine on a 1/0 Flyliner hook on 50-pound Izorline and 680-pound Spectra backing on a Tyrnos 16 reel and a Calstar 700 H rod.

John Yam of Long Beach won second place for a 70.6-pounder, and Pat Patino of Orange won third place for a 68.6-pound Guadalupe Island yellowfin tuna.

Hello anglers, Finished up at Guadalupe Island today for a few hours. We picked up 24 nice-size yellowtail and 1-50# yellowfin tuna. What an end to a phenomenal trip! I can’t remember having fishing this good here. I hope this is a sign of things to come. If we were to do half as well on the future trips to Guadalupe, we would be very happy. Looking forward to next trip, Capt Art ETA is 7:30 a.m. on Friday.

Jul 29-Mid-day

Hello anglers, It’s a mid-day report from Guadalupe Island. We caught just a fewyellowfin tuna this morning. We had nine fish this morning and since it was slower, we decided to head up the island to try for yellowtail. Everyone has enough yellowfin tuna onboard from the last few days! Currently we are anchored and we are catchin 15 to 18 pound yellowtail. We have landed about 25 fish so far we plan on staying here for a while catching a few more. The other boats fishing for yellowfin tuna have hadsome good action since about 10 a.m. Right after we left the area the fish started to bite a little better, like they did for us yesterday. Jul 29–Day’s end

July 29th, 2009|Captain Mike's Blog|

Hello anglers, Today we had excellent fishing for yellowtail–15 to 30 pounds. Most of the fish were landed using flyline sardines with a few landed on dropper-loops on the bottom, yo-yo jigs and surface iron. Yesterday was a great day fishing tuna and today was great for yellowtail. I can’t remember catching this many yellowtail in one spot at Guadalupe Island. This trip will be hard to beat in the future. Tomorrow we will try the north end for a few hours and then head for home with lots of happy passengers. Looking forward to next trip, Capt Art

Hello anglers, Thanks to the tremendous effort by Ken Franke of Sportfishing Association of California we obtained our Guadalupe Island permits and we came to the south end last night. This morning the yellowfin tuna started biting right away and we have landed 60 of the 30 to 60# fish! All the fish have been landed on flyline sardines and 40 pound line. The weather is beautiful, the water is warm and there is a pretty good sign of fish. Oh and did I point out it is only 10 a.m.? A great way to start the day. More later, Capt Art

Jul 28-mid day

July 28th, 2009|Captain Mike's Blog|

Hello again from Guadalupe, What a phenomenal day we have had–over 100 yellowfin tuna (30 to 70 pounds) and 20 yellowtail (30 to 40 pounds). It just doesn’t get any better than this, with calm weather, great fishing, good people and quality fish being caught by everyone. It is 3:30 pm and we are still landing a few tuna although it has slowed way down. You still can go back there with a live sardine and get a bite if you work at it. More later, Capt Art p.s. Grandpa Adden is taking a nap…that’s how good the fishing was earlier today!
