Art Taylor docked his Searcher at Fisherman’s Landing August 19 after a thee-day trip with 26 passengers. He remarked that the trip found tough fishing.
Ken Roberts of Fullerton won the jackpot for a 36-pound albacore. He found it with a sardine on a 3/0 Super Mutu hook, and used 30-pound Big Game line on a Shimano 20/40 reel and a Seeker six-foot rod.
Richard Hoagland of Newport Beach won second and third places for a 32-pound albie and a 30-pound yellowtail.
Hey anglers, We had a tough day today — less than 20 fish for our efforts. And most of the albacore are small. We had four yellowfin tuna first thing this morning which were good size–22 pounds each. We worked hard today but unfortunately we don’t have much to show for it. Hopefully things will straighten out before our 1.5 day trips next week. More from our 5-day trip, Capt Art
Hey anglers, We started our trip yesterday in the local tuna area. We had enough daylight to troll for a couple of hours. We had one stop where we landed five nice-size albacore. The weather is good so we had high hopes for today. We started today in the tuna area hoping for a gray bite. Unfortunately we only caught two small albacore. Our day didn’t improve much and we were not one of the chosen few who had a good gray bite on tuna. We had a long day and ended up with 17 albacore, 4 bluefin tuna and one yellowfin tuna. We hope to be one of the chosen ones tomorrow. Capt Art
Art Taylor brought his Searcher home from Guadalupe Island after a four-day trip with 27 anglers. He docked at Pt. Loma Sportfishing, as the Royal Polaris was occupying the facilities at Fisherman’s. Chartermistress Jan Howard, a Braid rep, made several notable catches, including a yellowfin on 12-pound line and a large yellowtail on 30-pound.
“We started out on the North End near Pilot Rock,” said Jan, “and we got some big yellowtail there, and some bigger ones on the weather side not far away. We had a night bite on slabs of scad mackerel, until the boat ran out of sinkers.
“Whitey showed up,” continued Jan, “and he got a lot of the sinkers. Once he breached on somebody’s yellowtail coming to the boat.”
Gary Holpuch of Golden Shores, AZ won first place for a 40.8-pound yellowtail. He said he got it with a sardine on a 2/0 Gamakatsu hook and 50-pound P-Line. He used an Avet LX reel and a Seeker 670 rod.
Greg Locke of San Diego tied with Ron Servis of Escondido for second place. Both men had 40-pound yellowtail.
Using one of the boat’s trolling rigs, Janelle Ross of Lake Forest cranked up a giant black sea bass estimated at 200 pounds, and released it.
This 4-day trip had 27 anglers and they caught 25 bluefin tuna, 151 yellowtail, 29 dorado, 7 dorado, and 25 tuna. The jackpot winners are:
Hey anglers, We fished Guadalupe Island for a few hours this morning before heading home, We had good fishing for yellowtail and again, flylining a sardine was key, and a tight drag to prevent getting rocked. Nice size fish up to 30 pounds came aboard again today. We didn’t land that many but the ones we did land are nice ones. More next trip from the tuna grounds, Capt Art
Hey anglers, We made the run to Guadalupe Island and it paid off. We had good fishing for quality yellowtail. Some of the fish will weigh 40 pounds. The best way to get a bite was a flyline sardine and 40 pound line. We did have a few fish on dropper-loop and 80 pound line. We are staying the night and fishing for a few hours in the morning and hoping for a few fish tonight. More tomorrow, Capt Art
Hey anglers, We decided to stay local today and try for bluefin, yellowfin tuna and albacore. The fish have been biting first thing in the morning so we opted to look 50 miles from home on the first day and today. We got a good school in the dark and drifted until daylight. The bluefin started to bite and towards the end we landed some yellowfin. We left the stop at 8 am and ended up with 25 bluefin and 9 yellowfin. Norma Ross landed a 35 # bluefin and Jan Howard from Braid Products landed a 25 # yellowfin on 12-pound line, a personal best for that line class. After we left that stop we only landed three small albacore for our efforts up until 1 pm. So since we didn’t see very much fish and the other boats in the area had the same results, we left for Guadalupe Island to fish all day tomorrow. On our way we stopped at kelp patties and landed 21 yellowtail–good size–and 7 dorado. After that we saw a school of common dolphin and we trolled by them and got two stops on yellowfin tuna. There was a pretty good school of tuna with the dolphin but they wouldn’t stay with us. We landed 5 more tuna. We are traveling south towards Guadalupe Island and will arrive around 9 am.
