Dec 4–Mid-day report

December 4th, 2008|Captain Mike's Blog|

Hey anglers, We have steady fishing on yellowfin tuna this morning. They are a little bit bigger than yesterday afternoon too. We manage to keep a couple of fish hooked at a time and occasionally we have 4 or 5 going. It is a nice pace–not too hectic back there in the stern. If we keep this up we will have enough of this size fish and we will move in towards the coast to try for bigger fish. The weather is the same, it doesn’t get much better than this. More later, Capt Art

Dec 4–Day’s end report

December 4th, 2008|Captain Mike's Blog|

Hey anglers, Unfortunately the fish didn’t cooperate this afternoon. Conditions didn’t match the day before. We moved around quite a bit but couldn’t get anything to bite. We are travelling east towards Mag Bay with hopes of finding some wahoo and dorado on paddies tomorrow. That will put us in position to replenish our bait supply tomorrow night. More tomorrow, Capt Art

Hey anglers, We arrived at Alijos Rocks at around 11a.m. We made a tour and saw a few fish on the fishfinders. We have about 20 yellowfin tuna so far and we are hoping for more. The weather is outstanding with overcast skies and calm seas. More later, Capt Art

Dec 2

December 2nd, 2008|Captain Mike's Blog|

Hey anglers, Today we are travelling and the weather is great! We have almost no wind and no swell. Yesterday we departed from San Diego. Everyone arrived early so we loaded our group at 8 am and we left the dock at 9:15. We got a great load of bait that has been curing in the receivers for about two weeks. It is a good thing we left early because we will be able to arrive at our first fishing spot before lunch. We are headed to Alijos Rocks where there are good reports of yellowfin tuna. Everyone is setting up their tackle for live-bait fishing. We have lots of eager fisherman who can’t wait to get a line in the water! We will check in tomorrow at mid day and let everyone know how we are doing. On a side note, we will determine the winner of our 2008 SONAR program at the end of this trip so stand by for the winner of the Shimano rod and reel and the 2009 fishing trip on Searcher. If you don’t get the 2009 schedule in the mail in the next few days, call Celia. She will be happy to send you one. More tomorrow, Capt Art

Fishing down…

December 1st, 2008|Captain Mike's Blog|

Hey anglers: We’re on our way south, looking for some good fishing on our last trip of 2008. On this trip we’ll be selecting the winner of our year-long promotion as well. On the last day, I’ll pick the SONAR winner of the Shimano rod/reel and the 2009 fishing trip. (All for bringing a friend fishing aboard Searcher!) I’ll be posting the fishing reports from the field this week. So far we have a great load of bait and good travelling weather. Wish us luck, Capt Art

ONLY A WEEK AWAY!

November 24th, 2008|Captain Mike's Blog|

Hey Anglers, Good news from the banks outside of Mag Bay! There have been signs of the big yellowfin tuna for a couple of weeks and it sounds like the fish are starting to bite a little. There were fish up 300 pounds caught the past few days, so it sounds like some exciting possibilities for our Fish Down/Fly Back trip leaving in one week. There are still a couple of openings on our trip leaving December 1, so call Celia and get on this trip today. We’re looking at having some good fishing with some great passengers! Capt Art

Hey Anglers, We are finished with our shark trips now and are looking forward to our last fishing trip next month. There is some really good fishing going on with lots of school size yellowfin tuna–with a few good size ones mixed in–and it sounds like if you hit the Ridge on the right day, you can have some good wahoo fishing. The dorado fishing outside Mag Bay is good and there is a sign of big fish on the banks outside of the bay. There are a few spots left on the 9-day Fish down/Fly back trip Dec 1-10. It looks like it is going to be fun! We will update this report next week if there is any breaking news. Capt Art

The boat is off to Isla Guadalupe to operate a few great white shark cage-diving trips. We’ll report on the fishing when we see it…and there’s still room on our last fishing trip of the year! Don’t miss out–December 1-10, 2008.

Seven-day Trip Report

Seven Was Enough

by Bill Roecker

Searcher jackpot winners display their big tuna and a super skinny at Fisherman's LandingArt Taylor docked his Searcher at Fisherman’s Landing October 11 after a good seven-day trip to Alijos Rocks and San Pablo, where his 21 anglers caught tuna, yellowtail and an excellent bag of wahoo.

“We had a pleasant surprise this morning,” wrote Art October 9. “We woke up to a really good wahoo bite. I saw a few fish in our lights before daylight and when the sun came up it was game on. We had 33 wahoo before 7 am. We tried to get everyone up during the bite but not everyone had a chance to get a wahoo. For those passengers that were awake, they experienced wahoo fishing at its best.

“After that we tried for yellowtail and found fish on a couple different spots on the coast. We had good fishing and the majority of the fish were caught on yo-yo jigs. The yellows were 12-20 pounds so we had a great day.”

Two tuna and a wahoo shared the jackpot honors. The best tuna was an 89-pounder caught by Jim Berg on a sardine and a 3/0 Mustad hook. Jim said he fished with 40-pound Izorline and 65-pound Spectra on a Torium 30 reel and a Seeker 660 rod.

Dale Bunting of Cambria won second place for his 83-pound tuna.

A gold Raider jig accounted for a 58-pound wahoo presented at the scales by Dave Buck of Altadena, who won third place for the big ‘skin.

“We also had a good catch of dorado,” noted skipper Taylor, who was reloading Searcher for a shark trip leaving the same day.
