Jerry King’s passing

May 10th, 2009|Uncategorized|

We will miss our regular June trip passenger, Jerry King, on the upcoming June 5-day trip, sponsored by Qualia Reels. Here is a first-hand fishing story about Jerry that makes us smile:

"So sorry to hear about Jerry King passing away so recently. We had the distinct honor to share a fishing trip with him back in 2007. It was blazing hot on that summer trip and I remember Jerry had a magic trolling lure that was a sure-fire boat stopper. It was an old red and white tuna feather with beat-up faded shiny stuff on the outside. Jerry claimed it to be the skin off a dorado. Every time he got up to troll that lure, he would hook up and bring the Searcher to a screeching halt. After Jerry got his fish in then he would head into the air-conditioned salon, leaving the rest of us outside getting sunburned waiting to catch the big one. Your cook would finish up whatever chore he was doing then sit with Jerry to play at cards. Nice. We should all be so lucky and blessed to do as well as Jerry when we get to that age.

I enclose a picture of Jerry that I took at the landing at the end of our voyage. From the looks of the cart Jerry did okay. No better homage than your friends helping you to get your catch underway. Thanks Celia and Art for have such wonderful crew and clientele. It’s what makes fishing the Searcher so memorable."

Hey anglers, Today we concentrated on the big yellowfin tuna again and the day started with Allen Ross of Lake Forest, California landing a 120 pounder. We thought that was a great start! We landed some dorado and released some marlin before lunch and then the wind came up and we had trouble holding anchor. We were seeing fish on a regular basis on the fish finders but they wouldn’t bite. After lunch we finally got the anchor to hold in 20 knots of wind and Steven Schneider landed a 60 pounder. We continued to release marlin and land a few more dorado. We saw plenty of tuna but they just wouldn’t bite. Lucky Lloyd Doyle landed a 90 pounder mid- afternoon and that was the end of our tuna action. After dinner we all met in the galley and discussed arrival in Cabo tomorrow and we ended the trip with the GRAND PRIZE drawing for our SONAR program. The winner of this year’s GRAND PRIZE is Chris Edmundson of Mission Viejo, California. Congratulation to Chris for winning a free spot on a 3-day trip next year and a rod and reel combo from Shimano! We would like to thank all of our sponsors for SONAR this year and look forward to having them back for next season’s SONAR program. Capt Art

Dec 9–late-day report

Hey anglers, Since we had a few hours to burn before arriving in Cabo, I thought we would try an old spot from when we used to run 6-day trips out of Cabo. It was a spot that we had a few grouper and pargo once. We got there and had good yellowtail fishing. We had about 70 fish in an hour and a half. All the fish were 15 to 20 pounds. We landed them using dropper loop set ups and live mackerel. What a surprise and a good way to end the trip with a little more action! Capt Art

Hey anglers, Today we fished north of Cabo and had OK fishing on medium-size dorado. We releasd about 12 striped marlin as well. So we had some action and some fun. We had a chance at some big yellowfin tuna but they didn’t bite very well. Lucky Lloyd Doyle from Long Beach landed the only big tuna today. It taped out at 180 pounds. Tex Gough from San Diego landed the only other tuna–a 40 pounder. Both tuna were hooked on greenback mackeral. Since we saw some big tuna and had a chance today, we are staying at this spot for our final day. More tomorrow, Capt Art

Hey there, Another day on the grounds today. Fortunately we had a little action and we landed 5 of the bigger yellowfin tuna. We landed two fish over 200 pounds and the other fish are in the 140-160 pound class. Danny Coe from Woodland Hills and Carl Schmidt from San Diego landed the 200 pounders and Lloyd Doyle from Long Beach landed a 152 pounder. Alex Ruiz from Alta Loma landed a 145 pounder and Kent Cremolini from Walnut Creek landed a 155 pounder. So we were rewarded for our efforts the past two days and are headed for another spot where we can anchor up, let everyone fish and still have a chance at catching a big yellowfin tuna. More tomorrow, Capt Art

Hey there, We replenished our bait supply really well last night. Then today, we arrived in the zone where there is a chance to catch a big yellowfin tuna. We didn’t catch one of those big fish but we did look at quite a few fish and we hooked and lost two of them. The weather remains good and we are staying in this zone another day and hope that the fish cooperate tomorrow. Capt Art

Hey everyone, Today was a day looking offshore for paddies and whatever we could find. The weather is still outstanding with an hour or two of light rain this morning. We didn’t have any trouble finding kelps today, but finding one that had fish on it was another thing. We did find one good size paddie this afternoon that had a few wahoo and a few good size dorado. Doug Nance from San Diego had his 50th birthday today and he celebrated with landing two nice wahoo –a birthday to remember. We did find some more yellowfin tuna associated with common dolphin and we had some action for a couple of hours. The size of those fish was the same as what we saw at Alijos Rocks–25-40 pounds. We are headed for the bait grounds tonight and then we will concentrate on better size fish tomorrow. Capt Art
