June 14

June 14th, 2009|Captain Mike's Blog|

Hello anglers, It’s great to be back on the water trying for fish again. We spent the day offshore looking for albacore, bluefin tuna and yellowfin tuna. We didn’t have a lot of success today but the encouraging thing is there are a lot of scattered fish spread out over a big area. Albies were caught 50 miles apart today and in between, with a few yellowfin tuna mixed in. We landed seven albacore and three yellowfin tuna, and the high boat had about 15 albacore today. All the fish we caught today were at least 20 pounds so that is a good sign. We are headed to Cedros Island tonight to fish for yellowtail. There have been some good catches made in the last week there. Looking forward to tomorrow, Capt Art

More albacore and yellowtail news!

June 12th, 2009|Captain Mike's Blog|

Anglers: Anglers: Fishing has been good the last two days for two San Diego long-range boats: 34 albacore at 120 miles on one boat and 38 albacore and 3 bluefin tuna on another boat. The albacore are 12-18 pounds and the bluefin are 18-22 pounds. Another report has good yellowtail fishing at San Martin Island. Those yellowtail are in the 15-18 pound range. It’s time to get out fishing! We havespots on a 3-day trip leaving next weekend and a few 1.5-day trips later this month. Book soon so you don’t miss out! Capt Art

Memorial Week Report

May 28th, 2009|Captain Mike's Blog|

Hello anglers: As you’ve heard, a few boats returned from the offshore grounds with some good reports. There were only 7 albacore caught over the weekend, but captains reported good conditions: clean water, good bait, 62.5-degree water temps, and one boat even saw some “jumpers.” Boats were fishing in the 100-200 mile range and one albacore weighed in at 25#. The rest of catch was mostly smaller size yellowtail, caught on kelp patties. Another boat stopped at the area on the way south earlier this week for a 5-day trip and caught 10 albacore around 200 miles out. The good news is that conditions look promising and we’re getting some coverage offshore now! Hoping for albacore, Capt Art

Searcher in Dry Dock

May 12th, 2009|Uncategorized|

Everyone’s anxious for fishing, but first things first, like a bit of maintenance and our annual Coast Guard inspections. We’re in our dry dock period at Knight & Carver Yard in National City.

Searcher in dry dock. Her bottom looks great!

The crew and I have sanded part of the hull (two other parts were done in previous years) and re-painted. We took off 1,000 pounds of old paint this time, for a total of 3,000 pounds for the entire hull. I am looking for some improved fuel performance after that.

We also took out the propellers and shafts for inspection and to install new packing. The rudders and shafts were inspected and we put new packing there too.

What better way to begin my 25th year as owner/operator than scraping bottom paint!

We’ll start fishing on Qualia Reel’s open charter on June 13. Join us on this 5-day adventure, or at least follow along on the daily blog report on the web site.

We hope to see you aboard in 2009. We have some great trips scheduled and expect some exciting San Diego/Baja California fishing!
