Howdy anglers, We had a slow morning on the water, but that soon changed after we had our lunch time bite–catching yellowfin tuna! We had another trip finisher at dark as well. We’re headed home in calm weather and coming back out tomorrow for 3 days with Capt Art at the helm.
Tip of the day; Don’t be afraid to try the mackeral in the bait trays. I hooked more fish on the mackeral than sardine, so give it a try.

August 19 days’ end

August 20th, 2015|Captain Mike's Blog|

Howdy anglers: We finished the day with a bang! We had a school late and it bit into dark. It was so much fun today we’re gonna do it again tomorrow. Here is a sample of the yellowfin tuna caught by Tom Carney and Jack Rauch. Good going guys! aug 16-21 yftThe wind has picked a just a bit, still plenty calm enough.
Tip of the day: When fishing gets closer to dark, heavier line will work just as fine as lighter line and it helps with fish loss. If you have heavier line and you tangle or rub on bottom of boat, your chances of landing the fish will be better
Good angling and hope to see ya on the water soon,

August 19 mid-day report

August 19th, 2015|Captain Mike's Blog|

Howdy anglers, Another great day on the water aboard Searcher. We had a slow morning but we found a nice school of yellowfin tuna that wanted to bite a little this afternoon. We’re on the move and we see another school on the bow. Wish us luck and stay tuned for the end of the day report. The grade of tuna is 18-30lbs–very nice fish. The key today was to have a bait that was swimming well, so remember to take your time at the tank and pick a winner!

Congrats to Steven Schneider on this nice dorado.aug 16-21 dorado

More on the Opah!

August 18th, 2015|Captain Mike's Blog|

The photo of the 100-pound plus fish caught yesterday is generating a lot of comments and questions on Facebook. Yes, Opah is edible! We are posting this how-to video from Tommy Gomes of Catalina Offshore, our fishmonger, to give some ideas about harvesting the meat from this unique fish. (Warning: A few “choice” words are used!)

Howdy anglers: We had some fair action on some yellowtail today, and we got a exotic–a very nice opah –on a yoyo jig. We’re guessing it weighs is over a hundred pounds. We’re moving up the line tonight looking for kelps and whatever gets in our way. The weather is superb. Wish us luck tomorrow. Here’s a picture of our “gold fish” caught by Paul Schlingensiepen.aug 16-21 opah
Tip of the day: When fishing with mackeral. you have to be patient and let the fish eat the back. I know it might be the longest 10 seconds of your life. but it will pay off in the end.

Hello anglers: We pulled off some excitement in the last two hours of the trip with great action on 20-pound yellowfin tuna. It was worth waiting for! Everyone had a great chance at catching a tuna. TIP: A live sardine on 40 pound outift with a 3/0 hook was the preferred method. No problem getting a bite with the heavier tackle.

Photo today is from early this morning with Fran Majors and Capt Ryan and her nice yellowfin tuna. Gary Gillingham from Accurate Products did a superb job this trip as usual. He used his expertise to hook this fish and hand it off to Fran so she could land it.aug 11-16 fran

Hello anglers: We had some very tough fishing today. We started in the bluefin zone this morning with very little success–just a few fish. But the good news is there were good signs of yellowfin tuna closer to San Diego this morning. So we migrated south for the afternoon. We saw plenty of fish this afternoon but it wasn’t in the biting mode. We are hopeful the fish will bite in the morning.
The weather is good.
