Nice yellowtail!

September 18th, 2013|Captain Mike's Blog|

Hello anglers: Today was a completely different day with not much action in the morning but action in the afternoon.Either way we had a chance at some nice-size yellowtail today. The method of choice today has been yo-yo iron (blue and white) and 50-pound test. Pictured with Capt Kenny is Steve Carson of Penn Reels and Art Razo, long-time Searcher customer with a nice yellowtail. Headed north to finish the trip with some more yellowfin tuna and dorado, we hope.

Different zone for yellowfin

September 17th, 2013|Captain Mike's Blog|

Hello anglers: We moved a little further south last night and we are concentrating on yellowfin tuna and dorado today. We see signs of the better size yellowfin so far. The tuna are in the 25-40 pound range. Anything smaller we are releasing. We have a few dorado also. Pictured is Tom and Matt Manning from San Juan Bautista, CA with their yellowfin tuna from a stop this morning.

Tackle tip for yellows

September 17th, 2013|Captain Mike's Blog|

Hello anglers: We are in the yellowtail zone today. We are catching a few nice size  yellows in tough conditions with lots of wind and a big swell. Most of the fish are being landed on blue & white lures and 40-50 pound test line. A few fish are being landed on sardines.

Start to Penn Reels trip

September 15th, 2013|Captain Mike's Blog|

Hello anglers: We started our day with a school of bluefin tuna before daylight. They didn’t bite all that well but we got a sample of 30 -40 pound fish with some small yellowfin tuna mixed in. We have also stopped and caught some 15-20 pound bluefin tuna since and we have a few dorado as well. Not a bad start! We’re hoping to get lucky and find a biting school of bluefin later today. The weather is good with 12 knots of wind and a little swell. Pictured is Capt Aaron with long-time Searcher family Howard Folmer.

Dorado too!

September 15th, 2013|Captain Mike's Blog|

Hello anglers: We weren’t able to find anymore bluefin tuna this afternoon. We stayed busy with small yellowfin tuna and a few dorado. Chuck Dominique from Las Vegas AKA “LD” (loose drag) is pictured with Capt Art and a nice-size dorado caught on live bait. We are headed further south to hopefully find some good-grade yellowfin tuna and dorado tomorrow.

Thursday wrap-up

September 12th, 2013|Captain Mike's Blog|

Hello anglers: We had hoped for a few more yellowtail this afternoon but conditions prevented us from fishing where we wanted to with 30 knots of wind and current running into the wind. We ended up landing some nice size yellowtail today and everyone had plenty of chances to catch a nice one. We are headed north tonight and hoping to fish a little tomorrow late morning, weather permitting. Team Hello all,
