Hey anglers, Today we had great fishing for yellowtail in the morning. Most of the fish are in the 18-22 pound range, with a few 25 pounders mixed in. Most of the fish were landed using flyline live sardines. A few fish were landed on yo-yo iron and dropper-loop. The weather is great with no wind. Since we are in the lee of Cedros, there is no sea. The water is 73 degrees and clean green–perfect for yellows. We did have an unusual catch this morning–one of the customers landed a 30 pound yellowfin tuna. We don’t usually catch tuna in the shallows here at Cedros. Looking forward to tomorrow, Capt Art

Hey anglers, Today we spent the day offshore looking for yellowfin tuna and dorado. Only a few fish were landed on the kelps today–it was pretty slow. We had good conditions with calm seas and very little wind, perfect for finding kelps. The water temp was 69 and blue. Unfortunately our efforts didn’t pay off. We are looking forward to tomorrow at Cedros Island with good reports from other boats today. Capt Art

Searcher Tries The Ridge by Bill Roecker

Searcher jackpot winners display their big fish at Fisherman's LandingArt Taylor docked his Searcher at Fisherman’s Landing October 10 after a week-long journey down The Ridge and back. Winds were up and the current ran wrong much of the time, said Art, but his anglers made a good catch anyway.

“We fished on The Ridge and found excellent fishing on yellowtail at night, and on dorado and tuna during the day,” he said, “and then we had excellent yellowtail fishing at Clam Bay.”

Erik Kinoshita of Torrance won first and second places for two 57-pound yellowfin tuna. He said he used sardines on 4/0 Flyliner hooks with 40-pound Seaguar fluorocarbon leader, 40-pound Izorline XXX line, a Torium 30 reel and a Calstar 700 H rod.

“He spooled me down to the last three wraps on my reel,” said Erik. “I short-pumped him to get him back with a buttoned-down drag. He came up midhship on the starboard side.”

Kinoshita narrowly lost third place to Tyler Kimbrough of Newport Beach when Tyler found a tuna in his catch that was larger than Erik’s. Tyler won third spot for a 38.2-pound tuna. Oddly, he and Erik shared in the catching of a dorado of 38 pounds when the fish ate both their baits.

Hey anglers, We travelled north most of the day in choppy weather with a short stop on the coast to try for yellowtail. We were rewarded with excellent fishing! The yellows were in the 12 to 18 pound range. They were biting yo-yo irons really well–blue and white and scrambled were the best colors. Everyone had a great time and now we are headed home. All in all we had a great trip with some great fishing, but some challenging weather. We had only one wahoo this trip–it wasn’t in the cards to have good fishing for those fish this trip. Looking forward to getting back down there next year, Capt Art

Dear anglers: We had excellent fishing today at The Ridge on 20-40# yellowfin tuna. Most were caught with a live sardine on 40# test line. There were a few dorado mixed in as well. The water is 82-degrees. We all had a good time, but Eric Kinoshita had two fish in the 60-70# range today. We are headed for the coast to fish for yellowtail tomorrow. More from the field tomorrow, Capt Art

Hey anglers, What a difference a week makes. We are finding some tough fishing all the way around. We’ve got 15-18 knots of wind and a little swell and the yellowfin tuna aren’t biting as well as we’ve seen before. We landed around 30 good tuna and released a bunch of small ones. We had a little action on 12 to 15 pound yellowtail and also a few dorado. Only one wahoo made it aboard today. We are moving south to the 23-fathom spot with high hopes for wahoo tomorrow. Wish us luck, Capt Art
